Cannot edit wordpress elements (widgets) on templates

I’m running the ultimatum theme and i’ve suddenly hit a block in editing my templates through the backend editor. I can’t seem to be able to edit any widgets once they have been saved., if i try to click on the down arrow on the right of the widget, i get nothing.

I’ve tried deactivating my plugins, i’m running Visual composer as well and have tried to deactivate that but has made no difference.

I have found a very bad workaround by deleting the row on the template and adding in a new row so i can change my widget but once it has been saved, i can never edit it again. any help will extremely appreciated, thanks.
