I installed this plugin with no problem and had hoped to go through the whole process from the WordPress plugin screen/dashboard but am having problems.

When I go to Appearance/Favicon/Select from Media Library —> I am brought to realfavicongenerator.net (beta) with the following message:

JSON could not be parsed. Check your syntax.

So, I tried to click on the ‘Generate Favicon’ link, selected the picture from my hard drive and then clicked on ‘generate your favicons and html code’ button.

From this point I would be able to download and extract the package but I don’t know what to do with the following instruction:
“Insert the following code in the <head> section of your HTML pages”.

Any help with how to do that in my WordPress installation would be greatly appreciated. And, better yet, if I could get it to work within the plugin dashboard screen, that would be great.

    Hi,

    Sorry for the inconvenience ??

You can install your favicon manually by following the WordPress Codex procedure (https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Creating_a_Favicon, simply replace the suggested code by the code provided by RealFaviconGenerator). However, I strongly discourage this. This is a bad practice, which forces you to modify your theme. Your modification will be gone the day you change your theme, it does not work with Genesis themes (they need additional work), etc.

Unfortunately, the plugin didn’t work and didn’t give enough details to investigate the issue. I’ve just updated RealFavivonGenerator: it now prints the faulty request, which will help me investigate the issue. Would you be so kind to:
    – Retry the favicon setup (ie. do Appearance/Favicon/Select from Media Library, etc.).
    – In the error page displayed by RFG, copy the faulty document (that’s new, it wasn’t there when you tried the first time)
    – Paste it here, so I can investigate.

I was wondering if you had the opportunity to reproduce the issue and get more feedback?

I somehow managed to miss your original reply so I am very sorry I did not respond sooner and truly do appreciate your helpfulness and diligence.
I tried it again. There is no document (just says ‘no document’). This is what I get:

JSON could not be parsed. Check your syntax.

Please contact us, describe what you were doing and insert the following text in your email, it will help us spot the error:

    (no document)

    Thank you for the feedback!

That must come from a client-side issue, because no JSON request was sent. It might be a bit hard to debug :-/

First, could you tell me which browser you are using and its version? (IE 11? Chrome 39? …) And also your operating system? Windows maybe?

    I am using Firefox 33 on Windows 8.1 64-bit

I tried with the exact same browser and OS… it works on my side ??

That may come from something special with your site. An unusual character in its URL that the plugin doesn’t handle well, etc. To check this, could you copy/past the HTML source code of your Appearance > Favicon page? (ie. https://yourwordpresssite.com/wp-admin/themes.php?page=favicon-by-realfavicongenerator/admin/class-favicon-by-realfavicongenerator-admin.phpfavicon_appearance_menu )

If you can’t or don’t want to paste the code here, could you mail it to me at [email protected] ?

    Hi again,

Another user contacted me by email about a very similar issue. He gave me the source of of his page and I was able to find the issue. It shows up on WP sites hosted on Windows machines. The fix itself should not be a problem. It is expected next week.

So simple question: is your WP site hosted on Windows? If so, no need to investigate any further. Just wait for the fix.

Yes, on Windows. I’ll wait for the fix. Many thanks!

I’m late, but it was finally fixed! I was able to reproduce the issue on Windows and to make sure the fix works.

v1.2.7 of the plugin was published a minute ago. Could you let me know if the plugin now works with your WP site?

    Thanks!

I am still having a problem.
First I updated the plugin then tried it by selecting my image from the media library. I got to the Real Favicon Generator screen but had an endless message: “Preparing the Favicon Editor”. I re-installed the plugin and got the same problem. Then I tried to do it by leaving the field blank and then selecting the image from my hard drive. Doing that got me further. The ios clip looked fine, the Windows tile looked fine but the 3rd section (Favicon Generator Options) gave me an error message: “Oops, something went wrong with the compression”. I followed the instructions to report it on GitHub where I submitted the image used.

    (@phbernard)

    Definitely wrong ??

Could you mail me your picture at [email protected]?

I am sorry. I just tried it again with a different image that is simpler and smaller and it worked (and I am fine with the new image). I will email the original image to you now. And thanks for your attentiveness!

    (@phbernard)

Thank you for the picture you sent me. At least I’m glad the initial bug was solved and that you managed to get the job done!

There was something wrong with the site, causing the “Oops”. That’s fixed. You can use your original picture if you wish.

About the endless “Preparing the favicon editor”: I added extra checks to get more information about the issue. If you retry, I’m afraid it still won’t work but you will get information to report. This will help me fixing.

Well, you already spent a lot of time on your favicon ?? Thank you very much for huge feedback, it really helped! Yet I would completely understand you need to move on and can’t afford to dedicate any more time on this topic.

    (@mium)

Thanks again. I ran it again. No problem when I select the picture from my hard drive but a different message when I select from the media library. I will send that information to you by email.

I encourage anyone else who is reads this to use this plugin. Despite the problem with selecting from the media library (which, judging from the dedication of the developer, I suspect will be resolved soon) I find this to be a great plugin with fabulous support. My favicon is up and running by choosing the option to leave the field blank and selecting the picture from my hard drive. I am confident that it will be optimal on all browsers and platforms.

For reference: the issue occurred because the blog was not accessible from the outside (it was accessed through https://localhost).

I should work on a workaround to overcome this technical limitation. One more item in the TODO list!

Alright, time to get some satisfaction by closing the ticket. How to better end the week? ??

Thank you again Miriam, see you later!
