Hi @nowton, thanks for getting in touch.

Is this with just a username/password combination or do you have any Login Security elements like 2FA and/or reCAPTCHA enabled on this site? If you do, try hitting the return key after inputting your password (or 2FA code) rather than the “Log In” button to see if it’s related to scripts on that page.

If you don’t have Login Security or the above doesn’t work, could you try renaming your /wp-content/plugins/wordfence folder to “wordfence_bak”, signing in as normal and then renaming the folder back to “wordfence”. When in the admin area of WordPress, could you then send a diagnostic report to wftest @ wordfence . com? This is so I can see your configuration and whether any paths or permissions might be stopping things from working properly.

You can find the link to do so at the top of the Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostics page. Then click on “Send Report by Email”. Please add your forum username where indicated and respond here after you have sent it.

NOTE: It should look as follows – Screenshot of Tools > Diagnostic > Send by Email

    Thanks,

    Peter.

We use Wordfence’s 2FA functionality. Hitting enter instead of the button does not change the error. Renaming the folder did not change it either. I mailed using the instructions provided. Thanks in advance.

Hi @nowton, thanks for sending that over.

Can I just clarify that when Wordfence was disabled (by renaming the folder), the login behavior was the same? This would imply it could be another plugin or theme issue. I don’t necessarily suspect WordPress itself, unless there’s a problem with how the multisite is dealing with the login. Were you able to send the diagnostics because the redirect doesn’t actually fail the login, just take you to the wrong page?

Are you able to change the behavior by disabling all plugins except for Wordfence and reverting back to a default theme such as Twenty Twenty-Two? If so, reenable these one-by-one until you see the issue return to discover what might be affecting it.

    Thanks again,

    Peter.

    Looks like it

No, I was logged in to the main site and reported from there.

Not an option, as we’re experiencing this on a production site.
