Please help. I have searched this and other forums and I can’t for the life of me figure out how to make my site public. I am more or less a WordPress newbie–I can navigate the Dashboard, but I can’t alter code or anything like that.

I have tried looking under “Reading” for the privacy settings. The only settings I have are “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” (which is not checked). There are no Public/Hidden/Private options.

I have tried deactivating all plugins, switching back to a different theme temporarily, and clearing my cache. Nothing changed.

I changed my site to private when I started building it, and I have since built it and would like to make it public, but it remains private when others try to access it.

I am running the Vantage Premium theme. Thanks in advance for any help–I am losing my mind trying to figure this out.

There is no setting in core WordPress to make a site private, so this must have been set via a plugin. Please post a link to your site and a list of the installed plugins.

Thanks so much for your reply. I did have a plugin installed to make my site private at one point. The name of that plugin was Safe Private. I have since deleted it in WP as well as its files in the /wp-content/plugins/ directory (per readme.txt files).

Here are the currently installed plugins:

    Akismet
    Hello Dolly
    Jetpack by WordPress.com
    Meta Slider
    MOJO Marketplace
    Page Builder by SiteOrigin
    Piklist
    SiteOrigin Widgets Bundle
    Styles
    WooCommerce (not activated)
    WordPress Helpers

If possible, I would prefer not to list my website here. I am having another person on a different computer try to access my site just to be sure it’s not my cache or something like that. He still can’t access it, though.

Please provide a link to your site.

It’s been suggested to me that I’ve used the address for Google Apps in the DNS. So I need the url for Sites.

Although that is what I originally set it up with. I did the site first without a problem. Then looked into setting up email accounts for the domain. And then my url started taking me to the dashboard rather than the site.

This is what I have in godaddy.
    ARecord @ 68.178.232.100
    CNAME www ghs.google.com
    CNAME mobilemail mobilemail-v01.prod.mesa1.secureserver.net
    CNAME pda mobilemail-v01.prod.mesa1.secureserver.net
    MX @ aspmx.l.google.com.
    MX @ alt1.aspmx.l.google.com.
    MX @ alt2.aspmx.l.google.com.

It looks like the safe private plugin would not have any effect once it is removed: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/safe-private/faq/, so there is most likely a different issue.

Can you get to your wp-admin?
What is the URL of your site?

If it is a DNS issue, it would be best to contact support at your host for help in getting that set up correctly.

    Hi cubecolour,

My site is https://www.kjarediting.com. I am able to access wp-admin, though I wouldn’t know the first thing about what to look for or change.

There’s nothing weird in my .htaccess file, either. Just “# Use PHP5.4 as defaultAddHandler application/x-httpd-php54 .php# BEGIN WordPress# END WordPress”

Trying to access my website from a different computer, I get a wp-login redirect.

    Thanks again!

It looks like a DNS issue as I get a ‘Server not found’ error when I go you your domain. It doesn’t look like a site that has been set to ‘private’.

Your first computer may be using cached values.

I would suggest you contact your host’s support for help with setting up the DNS – I’m sure they will be able to help you set up your domain correctly on their control panel.

Thank you so much for your time, cubecolour. I’ll contact BlueHost and see if they can help me out.

The login redirect is normal. This, https://www.kjarediting.com/wp-login.php?redirect_to=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.kjarediting.com%2F shows the site is still private.

I have since deleted it in WP as well as its files in the /wp-content/plugins/ directory (per readme.txt files).

Did you disable it before deleting? Try to reinstall it and then disable it.

    Hi kmessinger,

Yes, I had the same thought yesterday, so I reinstalled it, disabled it, and then went into the /wp-content/plugins/ directory to delete the residual files when nothing changed.

    Thanks!

    Not private now.

    Hi all,

(kmessinger–you caught me in the middle of writing this reply–thanks for the heads up anyway!)

Thanks for your help. When I was deactivating all the plugins yesterday, I was thinking that privacy settings would suddenly show up under “settings” (like I wrote, I’m more or less a WordPress newbie). Yesterday, cubecolour had written

There is no setting in core WordPress to make a site private, so this must have been set via a plugin.

It just dawned on me that would mean settings in the Dashboard wouldn’t change and instead I should have been looking to see if site access would change (I know, I know…again, newbie). So I deactivated all the plugins again, my website showed up on the other computer, and one by one narrowed down the problem to WordPress Helpers.

    Anyway, thanks again!
