    Hi gkruseman,

This error can be due to an issue with PHP, a surpassed memory limit, or an error in your code, plugins, theme, or maybe some database corruption. Here are some articles that provide detailed instructions and help you access your WP admin dashboard again:
How to fix the critical error in WordPress
There has been a critical error on your website

You can also?enable WordPress debugging mode?to see if anything gets logged there. If the issue persists, or you have trouble in doing the steps, it is best to to contact your hosting support to check server logs and help you fix the issues.

    Hi @gkruseman,

Getting a Critical Error on a WordPress site can be caused by several reasons.

    1. Failed Update or Incompatible Plugin. Since you are unable to access the admin page, you may want to manually deactivate the plugin through FTP.

    2. Same with a plugin, an incompatible Theme or unsuccessful theme update may cause this. Switching to a default theme manually via FTP.

Once you’ve performed one or more of these actions, try accessing your WordPress dashboard again. These steps can sometimes disable problematic plugins or themes causing the critical error, allowing you to log in and resolve the issue.

You can also check this article for a step by step method I mentioned above.

    Best regards,
    Niko

Be sure you have a recent backup of your files and database: https://www.ads-software.com/documentation/article/wordpress-backups/

Login to your webhosting account to get to the WP-CONTENT directory. In the WP-CONTENT directory you will see a directory for THEMES. In the THEMES directory – find the directory for the theme you were working on. Temporarily rename the theme’s directory (folder) — this will deactivate the theme. Assuming you have a fallback theme installed already (i.e. a WordPress default theme like twenty twenty) – the fallback theme will be activated.

If the critical error was caused by the theme you were working on, renaming that theme should allow you be able to access the WordPress Dashboard for further troubleshooting.

Thanks for the replies. Once I get access to the back-end I will try the different approaches to address the issue. I think it is a plugin issue.
