• I upgraded the site https://www.lanelibraryfriends.org to WP 4.2.2. Then it was hacked. I have a backup from WP 3.5.2 only.
To take care of the hack, I deleted the dozen or so files identified by the hosting system. At that point I couldn’t view the site, but the hack was not displaying. I didn’t try logging on to wpadmin.
I tried restoring the site with the WP 3.5.2 files. I still cannot see the site or logon to wpadmin with all 3 browsers I have.
I tried clearing cache, but that didn’t help.
    I saw some reference to functions.php – I can’t find a functions.php file on my site.
I am new to WordPress. Please let me know how to resolve. The hosting site would like me to give them the admin password, but I would rather not do, even though I can change it afterward.

  • hi , you need the database backup and wp-content folder, scan these properly for any hack, these shoudnt be clean to start with.

when these files are clear, you can download wordpress and install it afresh, restore the database backup and replace wp-content folder you already have

Hi. Thanks for your reply. I forgot to mention that I had uploaded the database from a previous, good backup.
Today I scanned the folder from the good, previous backup. This included the files and the database. I didn’t get any malware.
With the site control panel, I deleted the files under ./public_html/ Now my FTP software doesn’t see ‘public_html’ for some reason. I ended up contacting the host support to see if they can do a fresh install.
A related question. My good backup is from WP 3.5.2 But the WP install will be 4.2.2. Do you think there will be a conflict with my backed up files and the version of WP that is running? If so, I will need to start the pages completely from scratch.
Thank you again for your help.
