    Good morning
For our new website we want to display the featured image for Facebook, Twitter & Co.
This is working quite perfect so far.
But if there is a post without featured image it should use a default image for Social Media activities.
I can see that there is an option to set a default image here: SEO > Social > Facebook

But I am not able to save an image here.
I select an image and click “save changes” and after a seond or two the default image is being removed and the browser tab just says “The form contains 1 error”.

Any idea what I can do or check?

    Thanks a lot!
    Schoggi

    Hello Schoggi,

    Thanks for reaching out.

Could it be that the image dimensions are not suitable? The minimum dimensions are 200×200 pixels.

Also, can you temporarily deactivate all plugins except Yoast SEO and try the upload? Does it work?

We look forward to hearing from you.

    Hi Maybellyne

Thank you for your quick response.

My image is 800x533px (and 800x490px for another project).
Maybe this is too large? Or does it have to be sqaure?

Ah wait… maybe I have just overseen it, or it’s new. But there is an additional error message coming up on the page. It says:

“/wp-content/uploads/Homepage_Waitingroom_for_SocialMedia.jpg does not seem to be a valid url. Please correct.”

    What can I do here?
I am not able to add https://www.myproject-url.com/
in front of the image url coming from the media library.

Thanks for your confirmation, @schweizerschoggi. Can you please confirm what do you see exactly in the WordPress General Settings → WordPress Address (URL) and WordPress Site (URL) fields? Do you see the URLs in absolute format or in relative format? A relevant screenshot might help us to understand the issue better as well. How to include screenshots or videos?

Sorry for my late response, but I was ill over the last few days with vaccination side effects :-/

But now I’ve checked the settings you wanted to know about:
in WP Admin => Settings => General => WordPress Address (URL) and as well as
in WP Admin => Settings => General => Site Address (URL)
I do see the absolute url: https://subdomain.domain.com (sample)

But whenever I am going to include an image from the library to any given post, the image url is always relative, which seems to be the problem with the default image in this case as well.

Do you know where I can check for this setting?

    Hi,

Could you include screenshots of exactly how you are adding a default image under SEO > Social > Facebook > Default image so we can try and understand this better? You can refer to this guide for more information on how to add screenshots to your next reply.

It’s possible that you have a plugin or setting that is stripping the HTTPS and WWW part of the URL, as we would expect that the og:image tag that would output as a fallback (default social media image) would be an absolute URL.

    Good morning Michael
Here are the requested screenshots. All looks fine until pic 3. I do see a correct preview of the default image but when I click “save changes” I am getting the error message.

    Capture 1

    Capture 3

Thanks for sharing the relevant screenshots here with us. It looks like the File URL field that shows the URL when you click on the Select Image option and the Media modal appears is showing the relative URL and not the absolute URL. Whenever you are selecting an image, Yoast SEO simply using the URL to set in the default Facebook image but it needs to be in the absolute URL format.

We don’t think this is an issue specific to Yoast SEO as the WordPress media modal image uploader is showing the File URL in a relative format. We recommend you please check the File URL when uploading an image to a post or a page to see if that gives you the absolute URL or a relative format URL.

I still cannot find where the url changes to relative, but anyway…

    Another idea:
If I would set the og:image tag in the theme files directly, would it be overwritten by your plugin with the featured image of a post (if there is one)?

Than we could have a solution here…

I am afraid to say that Yoast SEO won’t override if you decide to manually add the og:image meta directly to the core theme files by yourself. You’ll need to programmatically disable the og:meta generated by Yoast SEO as well. You could find more information on the relevant filters here: https://developer.yoast.com/

    (@schweizerschoggi)

    ok, that’s a pitty..

I am using another plugin now (“Open Graph and Twitter Card Tags”) which works for my case. That’s not the perfect solution I was hoping for but yes, it does work and I can close the case here.

Anyway, thank you guys for your ideas and time. Have a wonderful summer
    Schoggi

PS: this plugin needs absolute urls as well, and the image picker is coming back with a relative one as before. But in this plugin I can change the url afterwards and add the https://myurl.com part.
