Cannot set mail icon properly

I wish to add the envelope icon onto my menu so that people can send me an email. However, when I set the link to https://mailto:[email protected] and I click the icon, I am taken to the website front page. I was thinking that it would open outlook or an equivalent program. Am I mistaken?
Otherwise, I have set up a contact form as a page on my website, would it be possible to link to that page while using the envelope icon?
