Cannot style checkboxes and radio options

I have added a checkbox and radio options to my contact form, but there is an error when <label> is used with these.
The documentation recommends to use <use_label_element> but this does not then show up as a label on the front end, and won’t allow me to style it via the Premium Addons plugin with the Contact Form 7 widget as it does not recognise these as labels.
How do I get around this?
