cannot subscribe email that has been unsubscribed in the past

    i get this error:
    SS_WC_MailChimp_Handler::subscribe(): WooCommerce MailChimp subscription failed: (email address) is in a compliance state due to unsubscribe, bounce, or compliance review and cannot be subscribed. (ss-wc-mc-api-request-error)

    This happens when a customer has requested to be subscribed to my list but he has unsubscribed in the past.
    why is it doing this?
    the customer is trying to resubscribe.
