As of this morning, The Edit screen is stuck in “Distraction Free Writing” and I can’t switch from Visual mode to Text mode. I click the “Text” link and nothing happens. Most of my pages are using custom CSS and can’t be built that way in Visual mode. Bottom line is, I can’t add new pages until I can get text mode working again. Also, if any pages need editing, I can’t do that, either – without losing my custom CSS code! Very frustrating! I’ve tried Alt+Shift+G and other key combos that are supposed to get you out of “Distraction Free Writing” mode and they do nothing. This is true for Chrome and Firefox both. Clicking the Fullscreen icon does nothing, either.

    HELP!

have you updated anything today? plugins, theme or core?

No, not today. I updated WordPress to v 4.0 a few days ago. I had a problem with a WP eStore plugin and was advised that my older version of WP was the problem. Updating WP didn’t cure the problem. They logged in and made a few changes to the plugin code and fixed the problem (of not being able to Activate that plugin.)

No changes to the theme since I started the site last year.

BUT – I just checked and it’s working normally again. I didn’t do anything to it; it just started letting me switch to Text mode in the editor again. No idea why…I had cleared caches, shut down and restarted browsers, logged out of and back into WP, etc. Nothing changed. Then I tried once more an hour ago and it was OK again. ???

just out of interest, which e-store plugin was it?

It was estore-shortcode-inserter-ui. The developer who trouble shot the problem with activating the plugin said that – odd as it sounds – my server “didn’t like” the word ‘inserter’ in the folder name. After changing the folder name to estore/shortcode-ui/, I was able to activate it. Then the random weirdness began…
