• Hi
I’m investigating a client’s issue whereby they used to be able to upload to BuddyDrive via the front end but now get a message saying: “File is empty. Please upload something more substantial. This error could also be caused by uploads being disabled in your php.ini or by post_max_size being defined as smaller than upload_max_filesize in php.ini.”

I checked file upload maximum settings and also confirmed that they can upload via other means into the Media Library. Searching on the error it mostly comes from WP core files.

Anyone got any ideas about this please?

    Thanks

    Dan

    Dan,
Interesting. Haven’t encountered this with anything related to BuddyPress or BuddyDrive before. What type of server environment is it?

    Hi it’s on PHP Version 5.6.26 on x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu / mysqlnd 5.0.11-dev

    [ No bumping please. ]

Hmm. Those values seem fine. Did you check that these php.ini values apply to the WordPress root folder and not a sub folder or parent directory?

We had the webhosts check it out and the max upload values are all OK. There are no separate php.ini files in subfolders.

    Hi @mrpritchett

Did you have any further thought on this please?

    Thanks

Does this occur only on BuddyDrive upload or all BuddyPress uploading or all WordPress uploading?

    Hi

I could change my profile background OK, and upload files into Media without error. But clicking the “New File” button in Buddy Drive and selecting a file which was 70k in size, I get “File is empty. Please upload something more substantial. This error could also be caused by uploads being disabled in your php.ini or by post_max_size being defined as smaller than upload_max_filesize in php.ini.”

So in answer to the question, it appears to be only Buddy Drive which is throwing an error.

Thanks for the info Dan. Sorry if the questions seem basic. I’m trying to narrow down possible issue vectors. Do you get this error when uploading to BuddyDrive on the front end AND the back end on the dashboard?

    Thread Starter Dan Atrill

    (@djadan)

No problem. I just checked and I get the error in Buddy Drive both logged into the front end and via the Dashboard.

Okay, that actually helps quite a bit. It indicates that it is part of the issue we’re currently working on to be fixed in v2.1 of BuddyDrive that deals with a change in how BuddyPress handles file uploads. A fix will be coming although I don’t currently have an ETA on the fix nor the version update. Thanks for using BuddyDrive!

Thanks for the positive response. I understood BuddtDrive had worked in the past – would this be a PHP version issue? I know I will be asked what else we can do, so is there a workaround till a fix becomes available.

It’s possible, did you update PHP versions on the server? Also, I would downgrade WP versions (but not back to an unpatched version) and/or try an older version of BuddyPress to see if compatibility issues could have arisen there. While I don’t provide dates or possible release windows on plugins (because we all know that stuff comes up and can lengthen those windows), we are working actively on the update and hope to release soon as it will contain fixes and a number of great improvements. If I’m able to find a fix for just this issue I may go ahead and release it on the forums for you and a few others with tangential issues or issue a minor patch fix for BuddyDrive in general.

    Hi @mrpritchett

The site was actually on an old version of WP (around 4.5) when it stopped working and we updated to the latest version in case that was the issue. We can’t roll back PHP though presumably it would be easier to check for deprecated functions?

    Thanks

Hi – I’ve seen mention of a new version of the plugin – do you have an approximate date please?

    @djadan,
v2.1 is almost complete. Unfortunately, I have a policy of never promising a release window as this almost always results in broken promises. Software development is just too fluid. ?? However, several fixes are already done and one or two more are being finished. So I’d say you’ll see movement very soon.
