I just started up a new account with Hostgator and have a freshly installed version of wordpress on there with the default theme. I installed the latest version of nextgen gallery through the plugin interface and attempted to add images to a new folder and recieved this error message that hovered in the top right hand corner.

An unexpected error occured. This is most likely due to a server misconfiguration. Check your PHP error log or ask your hosting provider for assistance.

I contacted Hostgator support and they wrote this:

Okay now I am not finding anything directly on the server that is causing this issue. I have try using different versions of PHP on the server to see if that may have been the issue. Unfortunately there is nothing in the error_log either. The only thing I can recommend at this point is that you contact the plugin developers directly at https://www.nextgen-gallery.com/contact/ to seek further assistance as the issue seems to be directly with the plugin itself.

OK I see others have the same error messages. I’ll read that post in case there is something that will help.

Edited to add: I read the thread where others had this problem and it didn’t help. The theme that I have running is a default wordpress theme and the NGG plugin is the first plugin that I installed. I can’t roll back the plugin either (that was a possible solution).

Hope there is a fix to this as I really want to try out Nextgen. If it works as I like then I hope to use the pro version. I don’t know of any alternative plugin that uploads via lightroom and has similar functionality as of yet.

@weatherandsky – I have been a HostGator subscriber for years and have literally lost count of the number of times I have installed WordPress and NextGEN Gallery … and I have never had an issue with uploading.

Is the upload issue when you are using the Lightroom plugin? I believe there is a recent recurrence of that issue but that would also be handled by the Lightroom plugin author. If this is the case, have you contacted them?

Hi Cais! No I wasn’t using lightroom for uploads… I just uploaded the normal/expected way via the plugin in wordpress. I also tried uploading various jpg image sizes.

I have the same problem on 1and1.
Generally with every update of NextGen 2.x I have to switch the plugin off and turn to NextCellent Gallery as my last resort solution. Some of the websites have been set up from scratch, with NextGen as a solitary plugin installed and default theme; it’s been happening with on different servers, with different ISPs. It’s a pity that such a good plugin has become so unreliable that I dread every update.

@tadturski – A common issue with 1and1 subscribers is using the default (numeric) WordPress Permalinks, try switching to something else and see if that corrects the issue. If not, you are dealing with a different web host and that makes you issue different than the OP; please start a new topic.

@weatherandsky – I cannot think of what might be the issue at hand for your site but if you would like, you are welcome to submit a Bug Report (https://www.nextgen-gallery.com/report-bug/ … please reference this topic) so we can take a closer look at what might be going on. We will need log in and FTP credentials for your WordPress installation, please include those with your Bug Report.

    Thanks!

THanks I sent in my bug report already but at the time I didn’t know to give login credentials. I will wait for them to contact me.

@weatherandsky – I believe I just responded to your Bug Report, thanks for submitting it. I am thinking it is your current “dynamic” URL that is behind this issue.

Once it resolves I expect everything to work out fine, please feel free to carry on this conversation via the Bug Report if there are any additional concerns for this specific issue.

    Thanks!

    Problem resolved somehow.
In addition to my problem with nextgen not uploading, I noticed that my blog post links were not opening (I got an error 404)… so I contacted hostgator and they said that they changed the permalink back to default as it was set to post names instead. This somehow solved the blog post links and nextgen gallery started working and I was able to upload an image. I’m not sure if the hostgator tech did something else in the background that got nextgen to start working. Anyways, this is all a mystery to me … im hoping I’ll get a hang of this wordpress stuff some day ?? mind you this is only my first day using it.

    thx
