The canonical URL feature hasn’t been changed recently in the plugin. As you probably know already, Yoast SEO automatically outputs a self-referencing canonical URL on your pages to prevent duplicate content issues, for example, when a page serves the same content over multiple URLs, i.e. URL with parameters. You can learn more about canonicals and duplicate content on this link.

That said, if you want to modify the canonical tag of your pages, you can do so through the wpseo_canonical filter as explained in this help article.
