Yesterday I tried the auto-upgrade to 3.1; it failed as most of my auto-upgrades do. Tried to go back to the admin screen, got the maintenance message. Deleted the appropriate file via FTP.

Later yesterday I tried to go back to the Admin panel, and kept getting 500 errors. Host says she can’t see anything wrong on her end. Looking at the files via FTP, it looks like I got some of the 3.1 files (dates of 2/24/11), but not all.

I’ve tried the FTP deactivation of plugins, but it didn’t change anything, so I turned them back on.

Should I just do a manual upgrade via FTP? Overwrite everything, or just the 3.1 files?

I have access again. I rolled back to the 3.0.4 files that I happened to have saved from doing a manual upgrade.

I’m still really annoyed that I can’t auto-upgrade with any regular degree of success. Further, if the auto-upgrade fails, shouldn’t it roll back to the previous version on its own?

    Have you tried:

    – working through the solutions suggested in Troubleshooting WordPress 3.1 – Master List

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Ten theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

Yes, as I said in my OP, I tried deactivating plugins, but it didn’t help. I should have said via phpMyAdmin, but yes, I tried that.

Is there a way to switch themes without accessing the Admin screens? I couldn’t reach any Admin function at all, so I don’t know how I could have switched themes.

You can switch to the Twenty Ten theme by renaming your current theme’s folder in wp-content/themes using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides. You may need to try logging into your site to get this to kick in fully.
