• After doing a WP update, I was not able to access the back-end of the site (the front-end looks fine). I only get a 404 page saying that the login page cannot be found. It appears that it has been moved, but I didn’t move it. I’ve tried disabling all plugins, which does allow me to get to the login page, but it won’t recognize my username/pw or my email/pw – says those things don’t exist. I tried with the client’s credentials, also…same thing.

I inherited this site (I’m at least the 3rd designer), so I’m not sure where to start on this…especially not being able to access the back-end. Do you know of a plugin that would cause these behaviors? What would you recommend?

Try manually resetting your plugins (no Dashboard access required). If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

If that does not resolve the issue, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename the directory of your currently active theme. This will force the default theme to activate and hopefully rule-out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).

@t-p I manually reset the plugins (disabled) through the phpMyAdmin, as your link said, which seemed to disable all the plugins. I’m still ending up with a 404 error page.

I also followed your instructions regarding the theme. The website came up completely blank at that point. The other theme installed is twentytwentyone, but it didn’t show up at all.

I still can’t get to a login page and I still don’t know what to do about the site not recognizing my credentials if I ever get there.

Also, how do I re-activate the plugins…individually? Right now, the client’s site just looks like code without the plugins, which isn’t good. Before, at least it worked correctly and it was okay for visitors to view, even though I couldn’t update it or log in. I need to get it back to at least that state until I can resolve the other issues. I was able to reactivate them all at once through phpMyAdmin, so the site is back to where I started.

    TIA
