My site just updated to 4.4 and I get this error code:

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare get_the_post_thumbnail_url() (previously declared in /home/sylumclan/sylumclan.com/sylumblog/wp-includes/post-thumbnail-template.php:190) in /home/sylumclan/sylumclan.com/sylumblog/wp-content/themes/sliding-door/functions.php on line 217

I can’t get to the admin section to pull up my back up. Can’t change my theme either if that’s a problem.

My site is down and this is not acceptable.

    Have you tried:
    – deactivating ALL (yes all) plugins temporarily to see if this resolves the problem (plugin functions can interfere). If this works, re-activate them individually (one-by-one) to find the problematic plugin(s).
    – If you can’t get into your admin dashboard, try resetting the plugins folder by FTP. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems. Also remember to deactivate any plugins in the mu-plugins folder (if you have created such folder). The easiest way is to rename that folder to mu-plugins-old.
    – switching to the unedited default Twenty Sixteen theme for a moment using the WP dashboard to rule out any theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins). If you don’t have access to your admin area, use FTP , or your web-host’s cPanel or whatever file management application your host provides. Navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and switch to the default theme by renaming your current theme’s folder by adding “-old” to the end of the folder name. Alternately, you can remove other themes except the default theme. That will force your site to use it.
    – If all the above steps do not resolve the issue, then try MANUALLY updating. Download a fresh copy of the WordPress .zip file to your computer, unzip it, and use that to copy up all files and folders EXCEPT the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory. You may need to delete the old wp-admin and wp-includes folders and files on your server before uploading the new ones. Read the Manual Update directions first.

I have the same problem but not even the error message!!! I clicked on update and my page went blank and now I cannot access the website or even the wp-admin!! Nothing!! It’s just blank!
It is completely unacceptable that WordPress would release an update that can make our sites crash like this! I can’t believe it!

Doing all that will take ages plus I risk messing something up big time! Can’t there be another solution that doesnt involve me messing up with FTP and all those things you said that I barely understand??

Andrea and Tara – thanks for the help and information. It was the theme that had broke during the upgrade. I put .old onto the them we used which gave me access to wp-admin section on the site and was able to upload a theme 16 temporary at least to get it up and running.

    Thanks for the help!!

    glad to hear it ??

The .old resolution didn’t work for me. But I’m so glad that it worked for others.

My resolution: I contacted my Server Host and requested that they restore the site from their latest back up. The did and the site was back up. There was a minor issue that resulted from this backup restore but the Server Host staff fixed that quickly and we are back to WordPress 4.3.1 and all is working.

On another thread, there was a suggestion to update the Sliding Door theme that I might test. https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/cant-access-site-or-admin-fatal-error?replies=10

I’ve not attempted this yet but will later. I have made sure to back up my public_html file first this time.

There is a fix for this here:

    https://mac-host.com/slidingdoor/sliding-door3-2.zip

It should come live on www.ads-software.com soon.
