Can’t add maxlength to single line text field

Maybe I’m just too stupid or too blind to find the solution, but I’m not able to restrict the maximum length allowed for this input field.

As I could not find an attribute setting I tried to mask the field with [* {34}] – but in the form I can enter more then these 34.

So – is there an easy way to restrict the input for selected text fields?
