All of a sudden, I cannot add any items to my menu or save text in text widgets.. the grey wheel just spins and nothing gets saved. I’m on WP5.6. I thought it might be the jquery issue, so I’ve installed the Jquery Migrate Helper, but that didn’t help. I’ve also tried switching themes to 2020… no luck either.

I activated WPDebug, but no warnings.

I have not changed anything in the setup (plugins, etc.)

Any idea as to what is happening?

  • Hi @jgold723,

Have you checked your WordPress file permissions on your hosting server?

You could also try re-installing the core. Worth a try!

    Kind Regards,

Thanks Tim. I can check, but I’m not sure what the permissions should be. I did check the link you provided, but I didn’t see a definitive list of permissions to check against. I’m also noticing this behavior in other sites in different functions (for example, trying to modify a block of content using WPBakery in a separate site.

OK, I checked further and I think I see the problem, but I’m not sure what’s causing it. When I check the developer console while attempting to add a menu item I see this error: Failed to load /wp-admin/admin-ajax_s resource: the server responded with a status of 500.

I’m guessing I need to resolve this with the hosting company? Can someone explain what might be happening here?

    Hi @jgold723,

Sorry – I am not too sure on this. Appreciate that’s not a very helpful response – but I wanted to get back to you.

It is certainly worth a conversation with your hosting provider. They may spot something in the server logs.

    Kind Regards,
    Tim

Thanks Tim — I really appreciate your help. Turns out the issue was a missing file: /wp-admin/includes/ajax-actions.php. How that one core file went missing is a bit of a mystery right now, but at least that resolved it.

    Hi @jgold723,

Thanks for feeding back, that’s really good to know. Well done on finding the issue! ??

I’m not sure if you can on these topics, but if you see it – don’t forget to mark this thread as ‘resolved’ to help others in the future. If the feature is available there will be a tick box under where you can type your reply.

    Thanks!
