I can’t seem to add plugins to my newly installed wordpress blog! I recently bought a domain from dreamhost.
My blog’s admin page doesn’t even give me the option of adding plugins!

    Help please!

    Check with your hosting provider.

That’s Dreamhost. What should I look for in particular?…

(yeah I know, I’m not very good at that…)

    But eager to learn! ??

If you had no tables in your database, you wouldn’t have a blog, just a screen asking you to install WordPress. I recommend enlisting your hosting provider’s help to track down the right database.

Sounds good. Will do and update you about it.

    Thanks again,

    hi guys

    i’ve figured it out.

the reason why i couldn’t add new themes/plug-ins was because i used the easy one click install of wordpress on dreamhost.

the dreamhost people told me that if i wanted more control over my blog (ie be able to add new plugins/themes), i needed to have the advanced install.

so what i did was uninstall wordpress, and then use advanced re-install.

James (MacManX) – thanks for the help!

You’re welcome! I highly recommend avoiding those automated installers as they often do more damage than good. The manual installation isn’t too bad one you’ve had a chance to try it.

That’s excellent news, thanks joshuasunga, and thank you also James for your patience with us beginners!

Not a problem, I’m glad to help when I can.

I’ve also eventually resolved my problem by reinstalling WP manually. As a matter of fact, Dreamhost does specify that by using their one click install “in easy mode, you cannot access the files for the installation (so you can only use the themes/plugins/languages we’ve included), but installation, upgrades, and maintenance are all handled for you!”.
    It’s all clear now.

    Thanks guys!

    Hi,

I have been trying to add plug-ins to my theme, but I don’t have the plug-ins section under my admin panel. It’s the regulus theme and I figured it was just the theme that’s the problem so I tried to change my theme, but in doing so it completely messed up my whole blog (www.statesofluxury.com). I was able to change my theme back to regulus and everything was fixed visually, however I still have no plug-ins availble. Can you help?

ARRRGH! Thanks Dreamhost for another unpleasant surprise! If I uninstall and reinstall WP will it be possible to keep all my posts/google juice?

I have the same problem. It is a clean install from the WordPress site, no Dreamhost installers or anything. It is WordPress 3.1.3.
    There is only one user in the database, the admin user, and the corresponding entry in the wp_capabilities was a:1:{s:13:”administrator”;s:1:”1″;}
I have changed it to a:1:{s:13:”administrator”;b:1;} – it made no difference (I changed it back). The wp_user_level is set to 10, is that correct?

I am using custom table prefixes – so in fact the tables are [PREFIX]_capabilities and the entries in [PREFIX]_usermeta are called [PREFIX]_capabilities etc. I wonder whether there is a bug there.

OK, reinstalled WP with standard table prefixes. No luck.

It has something to do with creating a network. I have the normal plugin admin area with the pulldown menu and ‘add new’ etc when I first install wordpress. When I create a new network with subfolders and login again, the plugin submenus disappear, leaving only the main plugin list.
