Can’t change quality

@r4ptor Could you please install this version of the plugin? Then, please, repeat the steps you did in your video. After the whole operation, please check the WordPress root directory. The webp.txt file should appear there – the information contained in it will allow us to learn more about the problem. Please send me its contents.

I got it working! With the one you linked to, but also with the one I installed from WordPress.

I changed Conversion Method from Imagick to GD. I had played with this option before, but it might have been before I noticed size issues and since both still do create webp files, I guess it wasn’t obvious to me, to have a closer look at these.

I trust it’s OK I only copy/paste webp.txt content once for each quality level. It is identical for other size variations.

GD is exactly the same with only differences in time and method name.

Edit: Even though Imagick shows lossless is at 95 in quality, I suppose it’s actually not used and probably defaults to GD – and therefore, no quality parameter is passed/used/recognized?

@r4ptor During the test, when the content of the webp.txt file was generated, you used the Imagick library – correct? Were there any problems during this test or not?

I used Imagick and didn’t get any other problem than the one with same filesizes.

I changed between Imagick and GD several times and whenever I used Imagick, the quality/filesizes would always be the same. I have since writing been uploading multiple images and checking out the different quality levels. With GD, it’s working. With Imagick, it never did and still doesn’t.

I copied webp.txt to my computer and deleted it from the server. Then changed to GD and tested again. This created a new webp.txt as well.

@r4ptor I’ve tested this on several environments using both Imagick and GD – no issues noted. The weight of the files changes as the quality changes.

Perhaps it’s a specific issue with the version of Imagick you’re using.

Could you send me a screenshot of the Help Center tab in the plugin’s settings? I will check it because in this tab I have information about the status of your website.

The support says they aren’t restricting so it shouldn’t be that. I can’t change Imagick version myself.

I checked it on several Imagick configurations, in different versions. I don’t see a problem anywhere. It’s hard for me to help in this situation – I don’t have access to your website. I can only help theoretically. No one has ever reported such problems before, and you can see that the plugin is used by hundreds of thousands of users. I am unable to reproduce this problem myself.

I’m sorry but I hope you understand my situation and forgive me.

My host support said, several conversion plugins have problems with newer WordPress versions. They didn’t elaborate and suggested I convert my file using an online service. I don’t like that suggestion though.

I’m using GD for now, and it’s working fine. I don’t know what the difference would be with Imagick but right now, I don’t really care. I didn’t expect this to turn into such a mystery. I really appreciate all the time you’ve spent on this and I’m also not sure what else to try.

@r4ptor You can also try to convert using Remote server. Then this conversion is independent of your server and libraries on it, because everything is converted remotely. By the way, you will also gain access to images in AVIF format. Images converted to AVIF weigh 40-50% less than images converted to WebP.

I’ll look into it. I’m not familiar with AVIF so need to do some research.
