    Hi,

we want to change our ingredients to singular-plural-descriptions, so that there is only one position in the shopping-list, even if e. g. one recipe needs 1 onion and another 2 onions. So we wanted to change the ingredients e. g. to “onion/s”.

But after updating the change from e. g. “Zwiebel” to “Zwiebel/n” is gone and it is still “Zwiebel”.

First I thought, maybe “/” is not allowed in ingredients, but we can use it in e. g. with “Chilischote/n” in this recipe (https://vegan-taste-week.de/vegane-rezepte/orientalische-wirsing-rouladen).

Do you have an idea why we can’t chang “Zwiebel” in the same recipe to “Zwiebel/n” or how we can do it?

    Best regards
    Henner

    Hi Henner,

Try renaming the ingredient through the Recipes > Ingredients page.

We actually have a plural feature so we recommend using the singular name for all ingredients and defining the plural through that Recipes > Ingredients page.

Your recipes and shopping list will automatically pick the correct form based on the quantity.

    Thanks Brecht,

this really is the optimal solution!

Even though it is a lot of work to apply this to all our old recipes. Is there any way to do this with a data-base-like approach? E. g. replacing “Zwiebeln” in all recipes where it occurs with the singular “Zwiebel”?

If you just change “Zwiebeln” to “Zwiebel” through the Recipes > Ingredients page you only have to do it once. It will be adjusted in all recipes using that ingredient.

Sounds good, but as I tried to change “Zwiebeln” to “Zwiebel” with the according plural, WordPress didn’t update the ingredient: https://prntscr.com/d9vcn1

Is this because there is already an ingredient called “Zwiebel” (https://prntscr.com/d9vdsb)? If so, I probably still have to change “Zwiebeln” into “Zwiebel” in the concerning recipes manually, or is there another way?

If not: What could be the problem?

Oh, right. It’s because “Zwiebel” already exists. You can merge “Zwiebeln” into “Zwiebel” using this plugin: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/term-management-tools/

Ok, thanks a lot! I guess with this we can clean up our ingredients in a decent time ??
