• I created a wordpress.com site, and when I tried to launch it, I selected “I have my own domain.” (The non-profit that I’m part of owns the .org domain through GoDaddy.) I followed instructions, but somehow WP now shows that I have two sites–the wordpress.com site and the .org site. I now have no way of directing the wordpress.com site to launch as the .org site. Typing in my .org address continues to give me the “Hello World!” message.

I’ve written to WP four times over the past 10 days, using the “Contact Support” option, but I’ve received no help and no reply. (My low-budget organization purchased the most affordable account, which offers only email support.) I understand that the holidays have slowed down support, but I’m starting to think that I’ll NEVER get my site launched properly.

I’d appreciate any advice in figuring out how to fix this mess I’ve gotten myself into!

It sounds like you need help connecting website created using WordPress.com to a domain name purchased from GoDaddy.com. While the WordPress.com support team (https://wordpress.com/support/) is best equipped to provide guidance, maybe a phone call to GoDaddy.com tech support would provide assistance to sort out the situation.

Is it possible that there is webhosting purchased from GoDaddy in addition to the domain name purchased? Maybe that is creating confusion. It’s hard to say since I am not sure what the domain name is to do any checking. (https://digital.com/best-web-hosting/who-is/)

(to clarify: volunteers on this forum handle self-hosted websites, not websites created using WordPress.com)

Hello, I believe you’re attempting to add a domain to your WordPress.com website. If this is correct, you must update your DNS record on GoDaddy and add the domain to your WordPress.com website.

    Steps to follow:

    1. Connect the domain to your WordPress.com website. This can be accomplished by going to Upgrades->Domain->Add a Domain->Use a Domain I Own.
Enter your URL and choose between connecting via A/CNAME records or connecting directly to your domain provider.

    2. Point your GoDaddy name servers to WordPress.com. ns1.wordpress.com, ns2.wordpress.com, and ns3.wordpress.com are the records.

If you go through the steps on your WordPress.com website, it will walk you through the entire process. DNS and name server records typically update in a few minutes, but can sometimes take hours at times.

    Hope this helps!

The problem actually isn’t on the GoDaddy side, but rather on the WP side. WP shows that I have two sites: cooperaudubon.wordpress.com and cooperaudubon.org (which is the domain owned through GoDaddy). So the domain is, in fact, showing up in WP, but I was trying to launch the first site AS cooperaudubon.org. Does that make sense? When trying to launch the WP site, I clicked on the “I own my domain” (or something to that effect), but in the wrong place on the WP website, which is why it created that second site. I’m now not able to get the two connected, in effect.

Just like @contentiskey stated, the support team at WordPress.com are in a better position to help you. Best of luck.

Thank you, Cassy. I actually have already gone through the steps you’ve laid out, and in the process WP created a new site, with the domain name that I own through GoDaddy. But I want the WP site that I had already created to be launched under that domain name. Since WP thinks that I already have a site with that domain name, though, it won’t allow the existing WP site to be launched as such. I hope that makes sense.

Unfortunately, I can’t get the WP support folks to respond to my emails.

@rcaudubon try deleting the website that isn’t required and see if the domain resolves to the other one.

That’s a good suggestion! I’ll try deleting the .org site. Thank you.
