    Recently, I upgraded from 2.0.7 to 2.1. When I was using 2.0.7, I could create categories but trying to delete them produced an error in WP which told me I didn’t have permission to do that. I was never able to solve that problem.

    Now that I’ve upgraded to 2.1, I can neither delete nor create categories. Attempting to do both results in WP telling me I don’t have permission. What could be going wrong here? I’m the admin of my blog and I’m fairly sure all my file permissions are set correctly. Why can’t I add new categories?

  • I think I have the solution! This one has been bugging me for a couple days. I noticed when attempting to edit categories, the address in the FF/IE address bar was “https://mysite.com/wp-admin/categories.php”, but in the WordPress Options tab I set “https://www.mysite.com” for both “WordPress Address” and “Blog Address”. Changing both of these fields to “https://mysite.com” (deleting the “www.”) fixed all of the problems I was having.

    Hope this works for everybody else with the stupid “Are you sure you want to navigate…” problem.

    Maybe is installed php5-suhosin (Hardened-PHP)?

    what a crock, I finally decided to convert 3 of my sections to wordpress and put this version on only to not be able to use the program’s interface to make and delete categories.

    Clean install caused this. I even tried to chmod my entire directory to 777, but that didn’t help!!!

    Ok I figured out why the categories problem occurs. If you are using a plugin called permalink redirect, DEACTIVATE IT. The www redirect will redirect ALL your pages including your wp admin, includes, content. This will cause some javascripts to stop working.

    The redirect plugin worked with older versions of WP but not with the latest one.

    Hi all

    I too can’t create new categoreis.

    I’ve tried that plugin recomended above, and although once I added and activate it, it allows me to create new categories; once I deactivate it, WP won’t allow me to create via the default way.

    What’s more, when I try to create a category, and I click on the “Add Category” button, nothing happens. But when I try to navigate away, WP asks me to confirm that I do indeed want to navigate away from the page.

    Dunno if this is a tell-tale sign of what’s going on.

    Has anyone searched the trac for a similar problem?

    Scratch that. The following workaround worked for me:

    Log in with admin;
    Assign another user in your WP install Administration privileges;
    Log off admin / log in with other user;
    Give the admin a user lesser priviliges (i made it an editor);
    Update;
    Give admin, administrator privileges again; Update again;
    Log off other user;
    log in admin.

    You should be able to create categories now. This is the “reaffirm admin privileges” solution found here.

    I’m not sure why this happening. But it’s very odd.

    I think the devs are on it, tho.

    Eureka! That’s it!! Thanks caynan.

    The problem I was having is that my host is set up to always redirect to https://domain.com but in the admin panel under Options I had https://www.domain.com for both URLs. Removing the “www” fixed the problem.

    Yea!

    Thank you Bartles!!!!!
    His/Her suggestion totally worked:

    “Somehow I figured out something that works for me. I realized that I was logging in via domain.com/wp-login.php. I started logging in via domain.com/wp-admin/ instead and everything works perfectly. No clue why this might help, but hopefully this works for others as well.”

    It’s the www. I had domain.com in both urls, but my crappy setup adds the www to the address bar when I login and so I had to remove it manually after login.

    this topic should be set to resolved

    No, I’m still having this problem.

    Any page under “edit” asks me before leaving if I want to.

    When trying to add a category either way NOTHING happens.

    I originally had NO www in the admin, but I had my host set it to always add www. But I fixed it in options, it asked me to log in again, and I still have the problem.

    Actually it only prompts me if I want to leave if I attempted to make a change.

    I also cannot delete any posts. They appear to be deleted, but then I’m prompted when I leave the page. And when I go back to the page they’re back. Never actually deleted.

    PHP 5, too.

    So what was this solution?

    This topic is resolved, but my problem isn’t. If I start a new post, no one will reply. What can I do?!

    I also can’t post with WSIWYG, it deletes all my writing.

    Fairly new install. Got one post up, then everything went wrong.

    I checked PHPMyAdmin and the URL change took. Hmm. I was hoping I could have just changed it there.

    Okay it’s resolved. I needed to delete cache. (Found that in a topic about not being able to delete posts.)

    I suspect THAT was wp-cache acting up again. That plugin has given me nothing but problems. Don’t use it!

    I am having this EXACT same problem on an upgrade. I upgraded two installs — of course my server is down now so I can’t check one, but the other that I was playing with I can not create categories! This is majorly frustrating to me. There are also other things I can not do as admin, such as create a new user from within wordpress (says I do not have permission). I don’t get this. But I want it fixed!! I have tried every solution listed on this page and still continue to get this error. The only plugin I have installed is Post Levels and I have tried this with and without the plugin disabled to no luck. HELP!!
