• Hello! I’m having a big problem on my site and it just appeared out of nowhere. For some reason, I am completely unable to publish a new post. I can click “add post”, type in content, etc., but when I hit “save as draft” or “publish” it goes immediately back to the “posts” page and I lose all my content.

I CAN edit other people’s posts. I just can’t create new ones.

In addition to that, when I do create a new post, there’s no option to add categories or tags.

I did absolutely nothing to bring this on — no updates, no adding plugins, nothing. This came completely by surprise. We have tried it with various users — admin, editors, contributors — and everyone is experiencing the same problem. It’s quite unsettling!

If anyone has any insight I’d appreciate it!

  • Is this problem persistent on a single computer or multiple computers?

Thanks for your reply! Multiple computers. I had four different people try it, and three of us are in different states in the USA and one is in India, so I’m sure it has something to do with WordPress and not us. We also tried different browsers just to be sure.

About the only thing I can think of: check to verify your user “roles.”

    Perhaps, somehow, they were changed???

That’s a very odd problem you have.

Thanks! I did check those as well, and nothing changed there. The users should be able to create posts without a problem. Ugh!

    Okay you can try this.

Act as if you’re going to create a new post. Once on the page to create the post, press Ctrl + F5 and see if the categories box appears.

If not, clear the cache of any caching plugin you may be using. Might as well clear your browser cache while you’re at it.

I hate to tell you this, but I tried both things and neither worked ??

I suppose you’ve also tried disabling plugins etcetera…

There’s been several recent posts with very odd problems.

I have, no dice! Thanks for trying anyway. It’s still not working — so very strange!

Do you not have a backup that was created before this problem developed?

    (@gthatsme)

I do have a backup. I’ve never actually restored a backup before. Do you think that will help? I suppose worth trying?

It’s definitely worth an attempt. Since no one else has stepped forward with a fix.

At this point, I think it’s your only option.

So I tried a backup but now I’m a little nervous, as I have Multisite and am not sure if it’ll accurately backup all my sites. However, an interesting factoid I discovered is that the problem I have exists on all sites, and not just one. Not sure if that makes a difference but worth mentioning as I keep snooping around.

    Hi.
This may be totally wrong, but happy to toss it in the mix of ideas…But do you have enough storage space on your hosting plan?
Could you be completely out of available space to create another post – or is it just your account that can’t create a new post?

This thread should be moved to the Multisite forum.

They are better equipped to deal with multisite problems.

Harty, thanks for your reply! It’s not just that I can’t publish a new post, but on the “new posts” page there are a BUNCH of elements missing: comments, tags, some of our plugins, etc. The “new posts” function is buggy entirely.

If I try to do a “quick post” from the dashboard, what it will do is erase the content of a published post and replace it with the quick post. It’s really weird.

At the bottom of the “new posts” page, it says there is an unidentified error in the comments. I’ve deleted pretty much all comments made since the issue started happening wondering if maybe there was some bad code that was thrown in via a comment, but that wasn’t it either.

Though I understand it’s happening on all of the sites, I’m reasonably sure it’s not a “Multisite” problem. That being said, I’ll definitely check that forum as well. If you have additional thoughts, I’d appreciate them. My entire business is run on this site and the fact that we’ve been completely unable to publish content for a week has been debilitating and a huge problem!

    Thanks!
