Can't disable automatic updates

  • I have added the following to my wp-config.php

    define('AUTOMATIC_UPDATER_DISABLED', true );
define('WP_AUTO_UPDATE_CORE', false );

    Yet WordPress still checks for updates and gives me the “Please update now” box at the top of the admin screen.
    How can I permanently disable the automatic updates?
