Hi! First of all, congrats for this amazing plugin. I’m happily using this plugin for a couple of years, but since yesterday, I’m facing a problem: I create a manual backup, but I’m unable to download it. When I click on “Download to Local Machine”, the page redirects to a browser error page. If I copy the file link to use it as a destination in another website an error message occurs (“maybe it’s not a zip file” or something like that). Thing is, I can make backups, but I have doubts they’re actually functional.

The only recent change that might have triggered this error is that a couple of days I installed a cache plugin and enabled cache and minifications. Besides that, I haven’t really made any major change.

Any tip on how to solve this? Right now, the website is working fine, but I feel insecure about being unable to have functional backups.

Hi again! Thank you for all your efforts on this. I’d rather use the FTP option, whenever I have a critical backup I need to keep locally. I finally changed the storage route (so that I can have access to it) and donwloaded it. I tried uploading it to a new WordPress installation, again via FTP, and succeeded uploading it. I tried restoring the backup in this new installation and seems to work fine, but still points to the source installation (I can only open the homepage, but every link leads to its equivalent of the source installation… but that’s another story, probably cache-related, or DNS-related).

I think we can close this ticket now, if you don’t have anything else to add. BIG BIG BIG BIG BIG BIG THANK YOU. I’ll research deeper to see what’s going on. I’ll keep you posted if I find out more.

    Hi @codimex

If you restore it manually like that, you’ll need to go update the SiteURL and Home options in the Database, and possibly your database connection credentials in the wp-config.php file, because restoring in this manner rather than with the transfers tab overwrites the full database as well as the wp-config.php file.

If you have access to phpMyAdmin or another database management tool, look for the wp_options table, and the options called siteurl and home which will have your production site’s address in them. Replace that with your staging site’s URL, and double-check wp-config.php to make sure you’re using your staging database and not your production database.

I should also mention that alternatively, you can use the Transfers tab with a locally uploaded backup as well, by getting the download link from the backup on the Archives page, and pasting it into the transfers tab. That will avoid the need for editing database fields and wp-config.

Thank you for this final tip! Couldn’t be more satisfied with your help! The quality of your support overwhelmingly exceeded the average, exploring options I didn’t even know existed. I’ll try that tomorrow. Have a good end of the week!
