In the menu editor on a network (multisite) installation, when I drag a menu item X below another item Y, X becomes a child of Y and no matter where I drag it, it does not move in or out.

The only way to return something to the top level is by dragging it all the way to the top, which means having to drag several items to the top in reverse order to get the desired sequence.

  • Try a different browser after clearing all cookies and cache for your domain and also make sure you have the latest javascript version installed. Try rebuilding the menu in order…just create a new one and use that in place of the original. If successful, delete the problematic one.

You could also test if this occurs with all plugins deactivated and using the default theme to rule them out as issues.

Additionally, large menus can be, let’s say, resource hogs…

Thank you for this suggestion, but a different browser and even a completely new menu still give the same behavior.

I’ve tried to disable some plugins, like Secure WordPress, that may have a bearing on admin functionality, but nothing’s changed.

    Any other ideas?

If anyone’s interested, this was due to a php.ini file in the admin area that was meant to allow larger uploads, but ended up disabling the admin AJAX functions.
