• Thanks for reading and even more thanks if you can help.

I have quite a few websites to move from one host to another so I have tested a few with Duplicator Plugin.

It appears to have worked perfect however, when I come to update WP or a plugin, its asking for FTP username and password. This wouldn’t be a problem as I have them, but it appears that the ftp username is greyed out and pre filled in from my previous hosting company.

Please could someone tell me how I can change permissions using FileZilla or how I go about being able to edit the FTP username to put in the details from my new hosting company.

This is the only stumbling block I’ve come across with moving the websites over.

I am not a techy person or no much about code, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • If your webhost has cpanel then you can not only change file permissions but you can create a new ftp account too….

Hi Thanks for your reply. I do have access to cpanel. Would you be able to shed some light on which files I need to change permissions on and which folder I would find them in?

I have tried to create a new FTP username and password but that has no effect when I try to update WordPress, the username is still greyed out and won’t let me change it.

    Thanks

    Hi, @whitehurstw.

it appears that the ftp username is greyed out and pre filled in from my previous hosting company.

Were those details entered in the wp-config.php file (using the FTP_USER, FTP_PASS, etc. constants) on the original site? If so, then they may have simply carried over to the new site as well, in which case, you should be able to edit the values in that file on the new server to correct them.

    hi @girlieworks

Thank you so much for your reply. Yes, its appears to have carried forward. I have spent the last few days trying to find out how to do what you recommended, but to no avail.

I don’t have any great knowledge in code, but I am very handy at following instructions if you know of anywhere that might be able to walk me through what I need to do?

    Kind regards

I am thinking that girlieworks was referring to your wp-config file.
If those FTP user and pass are in the wp-config..just change them to another working FPT account.

    Correct. ??

@whitehurstw: The video tutorial and the “Getting Started” section in this article can help you understand the how-to here; and then once you’re in the file, you’ll want to look for the FTP_USER, FTP_PASS, etc. constants in that file, and change them to be the correct values for your new hosting server.
