Can’t edit my website after upgrading to 4.8.3

  • I upgraded my site to 4.8.3 and it returned with some errors but my site https://www.mariakoropecky.com is still live on the internet. I have tried to make edits like changing words on an existing page but when I update the page, it says “Oops! That page can’t be found.”

    I also tried to create a test page and it won’t let me add media.

    What do I need to do to make edits and add pages to my site? Thanks in advance for your help. Maria

    It could be theme or plugins conflict:
    Try:
    – deactivating ALL (yes all) plugins temporarily to see if this resolves the problem (plugin functions can interfere). If this works, re-activate them individually (one-by-one) to find the problematic plugin(s).
    – switching to the unedited default Theme (Twenty Seventeen, etc.) for a moment using the WP dashboard to rule out any theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).
    – As an alternative to the above steps, if you can install plugins, install Health Check. On the troubleshooting tab, you can click the button to disable all plugins and change the theme for you, while you’re still logged in, without affecting normal visitors to your site.

    Do you know what those errors were?

    Have you tried temporarily disabling all plugins to rule out a plugin issue?

    Have you tried temporarily switching to the default theme (Twenty Seventeen) to rule out a theme-related issue?

    Have you checked your server error logs to see if anything pops up there?

    Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. Sorry I haven’t responded sooner. I don’t remember what the errors were. I have tried disabling all of the plugins and switching to Twenty Seventeen and from there I tried to make a change on the front page and it said the page doesn’t exist. Also, earlier I talked with my server and he couldn’t see any error logs from today.

    Also with Health Check, nothing was happening when I clicked on troubleshoot so I had to deactivate everything manually.

    Should I just uninstall and reinstall and rebuild from scratch?

    Hi Maria,

    Just curious. Is there a specific reason you didn’t update to one of the 4.9 versions? I know on one of my client’s sites, there was an issue on the 4.8.3 version. What version did you upgrade FROM?

    Hi Kit, that’s what was available to me. I didn’t know there were higher/newer versions yet. Maria

    Depending on your host and the package you got, that may be the most recent update/upgrade they offer you. I did an online request for one of the security scans to check the site and it didn’t show anything out of the ordinary.

    Thanks, Kit. I upgraded from 4.7.3 (I think). It says I have the most recent version of WP. Yes, there is a button that allows me to re-install 4.8.3.

    Did you do the original update from within your WP or did you do a manual update via FTP?

    I think I did it from within the CPanel (not my WP dashboard or FTP) because I was in there anyway with tech support from my Server.

    Hmmm…do you have a backup of the files and database, plus an export of posts, pages, and content?

    Latest version is 4.9.4

    Please note, WordPress 4.9.2 was a security and maintenance release for all versions since WordPress 3.7?.

    Hence, 4.8.3 is not safe!!!!!

    We strongly encourage you to update your site ASAP.

    Backup: If you haven’t already done, always backup everything (including your database) before doing any actions, just in case something really goes wrong. You can never have enough backups!

    Exactly what t-p said! Maria, I was wondering if your host is one of those that holds off on allowing you to update to the very latest version. I hate those. But then I tend to be a DIY kinda girl. ?? If they allow you to do a manual update to the latest version, you really want to do that.

    But take care of all the backup stuff I mentioned before. At least you’ll have most of the stuff you need to put the site back together. I always do a full “pull-down” of the .com folder via FTP so I have a copy of all my files

    Hello again, I just talked to my server and they were unwilling to update to the latest version of WP. I have to figure out how to do it manually. I have backed up my site. I have FTP but for another website on another older Mac. Is there anyone out there who can talk me through the steps? Maria

    MANUALLY updating: Download WordPress again and unzip it. Access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel (consult your hosting provider’s documentation for specifics on these), and delete then replace your copies of everything on the server except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies from the download. This will effectively replace all of your core files without damaging your content and settings. Please read the Manual Update directions first.
