Can't edit posts that already exist

Hello.

We’re using this plugin to manage who edits what on a municipality website. Lately I’ve noticed that users that are limited to a specific category or list of categories cannot edit items in those categories that already exist. I thought originally that it was because it was set to a different author, but after testing I have debunked that theory. Any idea how I’d be able to make users able to edit existing posts as long as they are in the category that they are able to edit? Help on this would be greatly appreciated, else I’m going to have to set up a new plugin on the website to get them the system that they want.
