• Hi, I printed out the readme instructions and unzipped the file, not sure what it means to “upload everything”, but when looking for the wp-admin/install.php file which is supposed to install the program, I cannot find it!!

    What do I do?

Also, is there any problem with having this program on my computer if it’s not a real fast system? it’s an older dual-core processor. I don’t really understand the difference between the WP.com and .org programs other than .org is supposed to be “hosted on your own server”. Both programs are downloaded to your computer, so can you explain the difference between downloading to your computer and “hosting on your own server”? Thank you.

  • You need access to a web server to run WordPress. It is not an executable program, so you cannot just run it on your own computer.

Considering how you phrase your question I think you need to learn a few more things before getting started.

First and most importantly is that you need to “host” your website. You can do this from a dedicated server or from a personal computer, but you need to understand that either way the computer that is the host cannot change places without causing problems.

In order to host a website you need a couple services to be running on your computer.

If you are already lost by this point then the easiest thing to do is to to use https://wordpress.com/ to make your website. It will walk you through everything and is pretty simple.

If you are dead set on hosting it yourself and doing most of what wordpress.com does automatically yourself, then follow this tutorial. It will not be quick and easy. https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Installing_WordPress

Thank you. Yes, I have not bought the web hosting yet. I was going to go with GoDaddy, but then I learned about HostGator. Do you know anything about these? Are there other better companies to go with for the hosting? At a lower price point? I plan to get 3 or 4 domains for the different projects I’m pursuing. I’m doing this for business, but I am a one-person startup right now.

Once I get the web hosting, then I can download wordpress through it?

    Thanks again,
    Diana

I would suggest HostGator. Its a common practice among hosts but the longer period you buy initially the bigger the discount you get, after that its around $10/month for the hosting.

Here is a tutorial that primarily revolves around making a WordPress website, but it will also walk you through how to use HostGator and install WordPress on it initially. Its a great tutorial if you don’t know how to make WordPress sites also.

Skip to 6:30 in the video for where he’s setting up with HostGator. There site has changed a bit since the video was made but you want to go to hostgator.com/shared to get to the plans he’s mentioning.
