Can’t get author taxonomy to work

I’m trying to insert a block into pages written by a certain author. I’m using

author:john howell

[which is the exact username] on the white list as directed, but it’s simply not parsing. I tried it with my own username

author:francine

in case it was an issue with the space in John’s username, but it doesn’t work for mine either.

The same block shows up fine if I white list a certain category, for example, so I know it’s the author taxonomy that I’m messing up somehow.
