cant get rid of a post

i admit i am not good at this, but this is ridiculous. i started a new website and at the beginning i put up a picture just to see it on the site. now i cant get rid of it! i deleted the pic, but the name of the pic and a big black bar going across the bottom of the site refuse to leave! usually i can figure things out but i have spent hours going through the backend trying to figure out where this is stashed! please help.
