• I am trying to have the homepage of the site show a full article post with the sidebar. It seems that the only options are to use a static page on the homepage, or several excerpts with no sidebar.

I’ve tried asking the folks who provided the theme (Write and Read), but have yet to hear a response, and I don’t think they have a forum.

Is this possible? Do I need custom CSS code, or am I an idiot?

    Thank you for your time,
    Chris

  • The way content is presented in a WordPress site is governed by the THEME. So when you choose a particular theme, you’re not only choosing colours and whatnot, but you’re also choosing a lot of presentation styles that go with the particular theme.

The theme you’re using is, tellingly, named “blogrid”… which tells me this theme is probably going to display blog posts in a grid format or little boxes.

While it may be easy to overwrite colours and placements with CSS, anything involving which or how much content is displayed will involve custom PHP coding if the theme doesn’t provide the configuration option.

You’re better off using a theme that is closest to the kind of site you’d like to have, rather than trying to retrofit a theme that isn’t fit for the purpose.

Anyway, you can post in the theme’s dedicated forum to see if the developer or other users can help you out: https://www.ads-software.com/support/theme/blogrid/

And don’t bother contacting spammers who come in here just to drop their contact information against the forum’s rules.

It is possible to put a single post as the main page of a site, but you have to modify a few things.
It’s easiest to switch the post to a page, but your theme still has to show the page the way you want (if the theme has front-page.php, it can do things differently than what you write in your page content).

If you have to leave it as a post, you can use a post template so it is displayed differently than other posts.
You can choose to show only one post as your Latest Posts, but you still have to make the theme show full content instead of excerpts. And then you need to use a plugin like Archive Control to show more than one post on archive pages and searches.

WordPress is made for Pages to behave one way and Posts another, so it’s best to keep to that standard.

    Thank you, George and Joy.

Good suggestions, Joy, except your suggestions are making a lot of assumptions about the theme. The theme has none of the options you’re suggesting… I actually tested it out before my first post.
