So it appeared that my wfence system decided to silently die. I went about dilligently looking in the debug logs and checking all the configs but nothing was clear. It seems that it just stopped being able to communicate with the wfence servers some time back in May (silently) and I haven’t noticed since then. So I tried removing the plugin and reinstalling. It wouldn’t even remove itself, so I tried WFAdmin plugin and that did literally nothing when I clicked on the delete buttons.

In the end, I manually removed the plugin by deleting the directories on the server, then dropping the wp_wf* tables in the database. Now, when I go to set up wordfence, the following error occurs when pasting in the license key (or using the automatic link in the email):

    Error Installing License

An error occurred while installing your license key.

Please try again. If the problem persists, please?contact Wordfence Support

I have no idea where to go from here!

Hi @ajrossnz, thanks for getting in touch.

Could you please try deactivating and reactivating Wordfence from the Plugins area of your site?

Problems might arise if you attempt to install your license after 24 hours from generation, you will no longer be able to automatically install the Wordfence license key. Additionally, if you are in a different browser than the one used when requesting your Free Wordfence license, you will be unable to automatically install your new Free Wordfence license. In those cases you will need to manually copy and paste the key from the email to complete the activation of Wordfence Security.

Aside from verifying that you did not inadvertently copy only part of the license key, I would check whether you can install the license when Wordfence is the only active plugin on your site. There could be a Javascript conflict with another plugin potentially stopping the verification of the key from communicating with our servers.

Let me know if it still doesn’t work after trying the above.

    Thanks,

    Mark.

As before, when trying to deactivate the plugin, the message “An unexpected error occurred while attempting to configure Wordfence to delete its data on deactivation.”. This happens even if I choose to keep the Wordfence data.

@ajrossnz, thanks for getting back to us and apologies for the late response.

You are probably getting the error message “An unexpected error occurred while attempting to configure Wordfence to delete its data on deactivation” because of a network error between your site and www.ads-software.com (where the plugin is downloaded from) and the plugin may not have completely downloaded.

In that case it would have been better to use FTP or whatever file browser is provided in your hosting control panel to delete the wordfence folder in the /wp-content/plugins directory. Then you could check the error logs to see if it gave any clues as to what happened. And you could always manually download a copy from the www.ads-software.com repository then upload and manually install it on the Plugins > Add New page of your website.

Let me know if this helps.

    Thanks,

    Mark.
