Excuse my lack of knowledge, but we have wordpress installed on our domain. We are trying to install it on the same domain, but a differnt IP address. Is this possible? I have installed many times before, but have never had this problem.

That’s the wordpress site I built. The customer wants to set up the new site here (173.201.242.1) before we take down the old one. I have done everything to install, but I am getting nothing. Thanks in advance.

  • You’d be best off putting it on a sub-domain (i.e. dev.werdata.com). To do this create a folder called ‘dev’ in your ‘www’ folder and put the new site in there. Contact your DNS host and ask them to add an entry for dev.werdata.com at 173.201.242.1. This will probably take a few hours to kick in, after they tell you it’s done, but can take up to 48 hours.

You can navigate to ‘dev.werdata.com/wp-admin’ to login, and I’d suggest adding the Maintenance Mode plugin – this can be set to redirect people to the current site if they go to the dev site by mistake, but you can still view it if you are logged in as an admin.

The problem with the current server is that it’s Windows. We are moving it to a Linux server to solve some issues they’ve been having. I can do a subdomain, but it will still be on the Windows server.
