    Hi Guys,

I’m having an issue trying to load the Audit Log Viewer page on a high-usage site.

The site is running on a decent server so it doesn’t seem to be an issue with resources.

I tried trimming the log down using the retention settings to 1 month which was just over 100k and it still won’t load.
I’ve also tried going down to 50k and 25k and it’s still the same.

(I have a staging site and it only has 180 records and it loads OK so I’m certain it’s related to the amount of records we get in the live site)

I don’t get an error as such, it just won’t load and eventually times-out.

    Hello @nicodhinsa,

Thank you for using our plugin and taking the time to report this issue. Let’s strart troubleshooting this issue with some basic questions:

    1) Can you please tell us what version of the plugin are you running?
    2) What version of WordPress?
    3) Is this a multisite or a single site?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Hi Robert,

The plugin is using the latest version: Version 3.1.7
Wordpress is using the latest version: Version 4.9.5
And this is a single site.

The staging and production sites are on different servers but are configured with all the same setup/versions. That’s why I’m assuming it’s related to the amount of audit data as that’s the only real difference.

Technically speaking the number of alerts in the activity log should not make a difference because when you open the audit log the plugin only retrieves the last X alerts.

X can be configured from the Audit Log viewer by selecting one of the presets values. Though in older versions of the plugin we used to allow users to specify the number of alerts per page themselves.

So by any chance did you use older versions of the plugin and have you manually configured a number?

I inherited the site so anything is possible ??

Is the option no longer available via the admin (what about the presets, I can’t seem to see anything related to this)?

Can you tell me where to find it in the database and I’ll double-check to make sure if it’s there, that it’s lowered to a acceptable value.

As I mentioned staging only has 180 records so it loads quickly and without issue where as the production server struggles. Is there anything else which could be having a negative effect on this?

The option is called wsal-items-per-page and can be found in the wp_wsal_options table. If it is specified you should delete it.

The plugin should still be able to retrieve the alerts regardless of the number of entries you have, though when you have 100K entries it is certainly not easy for the server/plugin/website/setup to handle such amount of records.

Ideally should archive the alerts to a secondary database so the primary audit log is responsive and does not affect the website’s performance. You can read more about external databases support and archiving in this getting started guide.

    Thanks a million Robert!

That value was there and set to 10k, removing it fixed the issue instantly.

I’ll read through the link and speak to the client about setting up an external DB.

Have a great weekend! Thanks again!!!
