can’t load image into a theme

I’m super new to all of this stuff so not sure how to even check the version I’m using…. DUH! I’ve got the default theme which says you can customize the header but can’t seem to figure out how to add an image to it…. anybody know how I can do that? go easy on me I’m a real virgin…
