• This is a little complicated, so I’ll try to be really clear … please read carefully …

I got my main blog up a few days ago. Let’s say it is accessed at blog.mainsite.com.

Well I want another blog at my other domain, which is hosted as an add-on domain, so the files reside at mainsite.com/2nddomain but actually the user just types in 2nddomain.com. So I created a subdomain blog.2nddomain.com. These run under separate databases.

OK all went (mostly) well but when I installed the second blog, I chose the same username, admin! Now when I log in, it goes automatically to my mainblog admin area and I can’t for the life of me get into 2ndblog’s admin area!

What do I do? I feel kind of stupid for picking the same username, but I don’t know how to undo it.

  • Did you change the database table prefix in the wp-config file for the second install? If you didn’t and the wp-config is pointing to the same database…

(BTW, you do NOT choose the “admin” username – it is always given by WP. To all of us ??

Edit. And WP hates any kind of addon/redirects…

I didn’t think I had to change the table prefix because I made a separate database.

The wp-config file points to a totally different database name.

Ah, sorry, I misssed that bit…

You may want to check the 2 URI values in the second setup:

OMG I just double-checked and wp-config points to the first database! How that happened I do not know; I set it up with the second db name!

OK so apparently wordpress overwrote my wp-config file in 2nddomain and changed the database to mainsite’s … so I went in and changed it back.

At which point, I check the mainsite blog … and I see 2nddomain! Sure enough, the database had been overwritten AGAIN … changing maindb to 2nddb!!! (All the permissions were 644 for the files … Is that supposed to happen?)

So to recap, a gremlin changed the second db to the first, and when I changed it back, another gremlin changed the first db to the second.

What’s going on? I thought several installations could live in their own happy little directories. Perhaps I need to change something in the .htaccess file in anything that’s below the mainsite level?

I checked the values in phpMyadmin, but they were all right.

YET, when I sign in to the 2nd domain’s admin, I STILL get the info for the first.

AND, when I type blog.2nddomain.com into the browser, I get blog.mainsite.com!!

This is really frustrating, because I had planned to have at least one more blog. Does anybody know why it’s doing this? Please?!

Here’s a question: When I set up the second database, I added the same user, wordpress, to it. Should I have created a unique user for each database?

    (@punstress)

Guess it doesn’t matter. I just deleted the user from the 2nd db, set up a new one, and get the same result.

    This is really, really frustrating!!

Nobody has an answer for me?
