• When I try to log out from the admin interface using the upper left menu, I get my standard 404 page and the URL is /wp-login.php?action=logout&_wpnonce=6bafa774a0

    I’ve tried:
-emptying the cache (WP Super Cache)
-disabling ALL plugins including the cache
    -switching to Twenty Sixteen theme
…at this point I still can’t log out.

I’ve tried multiple browsers with no luck. Help!!

  • try setting the permalinks to the default and see if you can get out.

I’m not sure what the default setting is, but I have it set to post-name. I clicked save with it still set to post name so the links would be rebuilt and that didn’t help.

Sorry, I should have said ‘set them to the plain settings (I thing they changed ‘default’ to ‘plain’ at some point and I never noticed)

if worse comes to worse, if you change the salt values in wp-config.php, it will force ALL logged in users to re-login.

I tried plain settings but no luck there either.

I’m mildly concerned that if I change the salt value and force logout my admin user, I might not be able to log back in!?

Could this be an .htaccess issue? I thought I had narrowed it down to one plugin (Yoast SEO) because whenever I disabled it I could log out. After upgrading to WP 4.6, even with ALL plugins disabled and a clean 2016 theme active I can’t logout. It’s very weird. Thanks for the suggestions so far.

The salt doesn’t effect your password, your same password will still work. It effects the authorization cookies stored on your machine. Once you change the salt, your cookies are no longer valid and you need to log in again

This could be an .taccess issue – is this site in a subfolder of another wordpress site?

It’s not in a sub-folder of another *site*, but it is in a sub-folder. It was all working correctly, and as said I could cause/fix the problem at will by toggling the YOast plugin, but ever since upgrading to WP 4.6 I can’t fix it at all.

You could try renaming yout .htaccess file – WP should rebuild it – to see if that helps.

Hmm, I don’t think WordPress rebuilds a missing .htaccess? I tried renaming it but of course that broke everything.

I renamed the plugins folder and still couldn’t log out, so that tells me that it isn’t a plugin problem, right?
