• I’ve been running WP fine for a month at https://www.haikusmackdown.com Tonight? I went to login? And when I entered my admin login and password, it just refreshes the login screen without either field entered. I know I’m typing it right – I have been for a month now. What could have happened?

  • I agree with the sentiment, but No.2 ? Why ?
    I really don’t know why they can’t be there……

I’d like to thank podz who has been on point on this login issue in the forum for a long time now. He has done a bucketful of work in helping as many folks as possible get back online and in clarifying and identifying the issues in what has been a very intractable and frustrating problem for many. Tx.

Part, or maybe even the biggest bit, of the problem is that as far as anyone knows, there is no common ground between what is happening in each case.
If you are to track down an error, it needs to be repeatable. The circumstances at the point an error occurs can then be identified and code altered to prevent it occurring.
This just is not repeatable with any certainty at all.
I’ve altered my password once, and had no other problems. I’ve altered several passwords for people, and not yet had anyone come back to me saying it has happened again.
It could be the version of php, it could be a wierd combination of OS/browsers, if it’s the WP code, then why is it not happening more widely (there are over 10,000 WP blogs, if not more).
I’m sure the frustration expressed here is felt by the devs (it certainly is by myself and I’m confident other regular contributors to the forum feel this way as well) but unless something can be done to identify more closely the ‘why’ of it happening, I really can’t see what we can pester the devs to do.
No-one wants to lose their blog because of an event like this, but that is why there is help here, and as far as I know, it does work in the end. The reason I wrote the phpmyadmin guide last night was not so that people felt they must not bother this forum again, but more so as someone does not have to wait as long for help and that some graphics to go with the words may help.
I’m sure that the devs would be delighted to be able to find the cause of this and take positive action, but unless anyone can come up with quite how we (that’s us who have had this issue) can collate whatever information is needed, I don’t see how we can really progress. Any constructive advice on this would, I’m sure, be very welcome.
    Root – thanks ??
    Change your password using phpmyadmin:
    https://www.mfr.f2s.com/phpmyadmin/

podz that is a really useful resource. Where it will help, is that folks who wish to offer support in the forum but who do not know much about the issue, can at least offer the link to the *First Aid Post*. That is what I plan to do. If several folks can do that from time to time it should ease the pressure a bit.

Perhaps one more time (especially for Podz who is becoming an expert on this…) to clarify my own circumstances which I investigated as thorough as possible:
    – installation in parallel directories
    – changed the blogurl to be different from the wpurl to accomplish this
    – everything works ok, but after logging out I can’t login again (I keep getting the loginscreen time after time, so I’m not being redirected. There’s nothing wrong with te password)
    – I go to phpmyadmin and change the ‘home’ setting back to the wp-directory instead of https://www.mysite.com/blog. Now I can login again, but I have to change the blogurl again for my blog to be able to find the right stylesheetdocument.
    – I tested this by (in the optionsscreen) setting the blogurl to be the same again as the wp-directory, then logout. After that I can nicely login again without having ever changed the password. No problem. But now my site is missing the right links again. So the only option I have right now is to never logout.
Well, doesn’t this sound like a simple problem? And it occurs in IE 5 and 6, and Mozilla and Firebird, and on two other computers from friends. Nothing to do with cookies this time (I tried all those things), and nothing to do with lost passwords.
Oh well, I typed this ‘story’ about 5 times now, but still couldn’t find a solution. And the reason why it doesn’t occur more often… is probably because most people don’t bother to play around with their installations and keep it the way it comes.

Here is my two cents. There might be two bugs and they might be linked or they might not. Many of us have experienced a no login on install. Sometimes a reinstall clears it. Sometimes it seems to clear itself. Then comes the second category. Login works fine then login stops. Mine occurred following a second WP install to a parallel directory.

@ Moxie: ” because most people don’t bother to play around with their installations and keep it the way it comes.”
I haven’t seen the point of altering the way it is.
I see a lot of posts here about installing WP in one place but having the blog elsewhere, and I’m pretty sure someone in #wordpress told me why they did it, but it’s something I just don’t get.
I keep meaning to try such an install – just so I can answer questions here on it – but I’ve yet to do it.
We all have our ideas of how our sites should look, and my view has always been that my blog should be in a sub-directory. For me to then install WP in another subdirectory just seems .. well … pointless. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, just that I don’t get it. (I’m sure watching football is great for some, but I don’t get that either ?? )
As to what you have described, I think that is just the sort of info that someone with a better knowledge of WordPress may be able to make something of – I will mention this post in #wordpress later. Thanks for posting it ??

    Thanks for your reply Podz.
To clarify the reason why I keep the two directories seperated: First I like a clean structure on my computer and on the server. If I would put my blog in a subdirectory, it would reside next to /wp-includes, /wp-images etc. In the case of reinstalling, upgrading, copying, moving and deleting files I find it much safer to keep everything in their own directory so I can’t make a stupid mistake (and I’m very quick in using the button “OK, go ahead, delete all those files permanently…”).
Also I will be adding more directories (photoalbum/birds/drawings/haiku’s etc.) + if I ever want to switch to another blogtool (…..) my weblog is always the same: a direct subdirectory within the root of my domain: https://www.domain.com/blog. All absolute links will always work.

Hey there Podz – thanks for the graphic-based tutorial on passcode changes! I hope I won’t need to use it – but it is VERY helpful (in case)!

    Ta !
    – let’s hope it’s not needed though ??

I’m too lazy to register–no time right now. Elfie – [email protected] if you want to reach me. lol.
I had the same problem–with only a couple login’s across a couple sites–I have about 4 installs of WordPress…one on sexygirlgeek.com (1.2), two installs of 1.2 & one of 1.1 on michee.vrtisworks.com. Up until…sometime last week(ish) all logged in just fine, no problems. Now (and I haven’t changed a *thing* anywhere–no hacks, nothing except the initial template change on the blog I’m having the most problem with). Suddenly, two of my logins (on seperate blogs) don’t work–and all have the same passwords (no, not safe but they’re only for testing anyway)–no longer work. I get the same blank log-in screen everyone’s been describing. The admin doesn’t work for one site and a regular user doesn’t work for another site. Literally, there has been no changes in the past couple of weeks (particularly on the server where these sites are)…both sites are full installs of WP in separate databases within their own subdirectories. One post mentioned that they were logged in, it just wasn’t redirecting–but I’ve attempted going directly to an admin page and I’m redirected to the login screen. So, Podz, yes, I think this is a development issue. The site I cannot login as admin is a default install–no plugins. The only change is to the stylesheet and one or two things to the blog template. I suspect this problem is a lot more prevelent than it seems because a lot of people probably aren’t thinking to post. *shrug* IMO, anyway. I’m quite surprised that there is so little response from the development team. As well, there was mention that this was “fixed” in a nightly build of WP–my question is why this wasn’t released as a patch of any sort…and why it wasn’t mentioned in the DevBlog (or at least, I missed it if it was there). To me, this is a pretty major issue! I have tried all the fixes suggested–with no luck whatsoever. “Lost password?” doesn’t work–even when I use the wp-login.php from the latest nightly.
I love WP…obviously since I use it for so many sites…but I *can’t* stay if I *can’t* get into my site!!!
And I’m currently attempting to find repeatablility…which is why there is as much detail as I can in my post; a number of other people have done so as well. I’ve even started scanning the source–but, as nothing has changed and I’m not familiar with the code, I’m absolutely stumped why it doesn’t work. ??
Oh, and the site seems to appear just fine–comments even work. I just can’t login to post!

Just for the record, are you using parallel directories or are all your installations installed in subdirectories of your site?
And in my case I’m also being redirected when I try to adress the admin-screen directly… I forgot to put that in my own version of this very annoying bug.

All my installations are in subdirectories. I.e.: https://www.michee.vrtisworks.com/tpa & https://www.michee.vrtisworks.com/wp
I don’t really understand the subtle difference in what you’re asking…*shrug* I don’t get the “wp” in this directory & “blog” in another that’s been part of this discussion…I’ve just done full installs to keep everything clean (and so that I can (eventually) hack each incarnation specifically for that site).

It seems there’s a bit of a solution…there’s a typo (?) in the login code…My dad (and co-worker) found the error (as he’s had a bit more spare time than me this week).

the path for the cookie was being set to COOKIEPATH instead of /tpa/… so the cookies were not valid… So, never got set, sonever got found, so…
Oh yea.. the error messages were getting tossed (and probably do get tossed
a lot of other places…) I at least added them if the login is not valid.

The new source has been posted to https://www.sexygirlgeek.com/share/wp-login.php
I tried it just now and I can actually login! If you need to contact me: iamATsexygirlgeek.com

Ooops, the above link should have an “s” on the end…
