Hello, from yesterday evening, I found I couldn’t log into my site’s wp-admin.
It kept returning me to the login panel, with no error message or anything.

A friend who had remained logged in could still manage the site’s publications (but he doesn’t have admin rights). I advised him to NOT log out for any reason just yet.

I tried creating another admin user directly into the database. Same problem, couldn’t login.

Finally, this morning, I deactivated all plugins (by ftp-moving them to a different directory), and re-enabled them one by one.

BINGO : when Jetpack (8.1.1) is installed and enabled, the wp-admin login panel fails.

    Help ?

    Hi there,

This is a bug that a few people have been reporting since upgrading to Jetpack 8.1.1. You can see a related thread here:

    https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/bug-8-1-1/

Could you let me know the following:

    – What browser is this happening in?
    – Is your browser up to date?
    – What happens if you try in an incognito window?
    – What happens if you try in a different browser?
    – What version of WordPress do you use on your site?
    – Is your site set to use HTTP or HTTPS?
    – Could you try clearing your site’s cookies by following these exact steps, and let me know if it helps?

This information will be really important to help us understand what is happening on your site.

    Thanks!

Browsers : Firefox 72.0.2 (up to date), Google Chrome (as well)
    Cache emptied made no difference.

    WordPress 5.3.2 | PHP 7.4.0 | Apache/2.2 | MySQL 10.1.31-MariaDB

    Site : https://www.mysite.com
    Control panel access: https://www.mysite.com/wp2019/wp-admin
(the WP install is in a wp2019 subdirectory)

I’ll try clearing the cookies right away, and will report back.

OK… this is getting weirder and weirder…
    Do browsers share their cookies?

    Here’s what I did :
    – enabled Jetpack 8.1.1
    – logged out from wp-admin on my (usual) Firefox browser
    – opened Chrome
    – erased in Chrome all “history” (cache, cookies, etc…)
    – attempted wp-admin login : SUCCESS. And yes, verified, Jetpack 8.1.1 is active.
    o-kay, then :
    – logged out from wp-admin under Chrome
    – exited Chrome, opened Firefox
    – attempted wp-admin login : SUCCESS. And yes, verified, Jetpack 8.1.1 is active.

    WTF?
I guess I should be happy it appears to be all working now, but…

NOPE: not quite there yet !

I had the nag screen from Jetpack at the top of my control panel.
Clicked “configure Jetpack”, it went off to connect to some account, then back, apparently OK, nag screen gone.
Log out, try to log in: bam! not working anymore.

    Conclusion (as of now) :
(maybe clearing the cookies helped, maybe not)
    Jetpack installed fresh: OK
    Jetpack activated : OK
    Jetpack “configured” : breaks login

Backleveling to 8.1 works for me, while y’all are hard at work trying to fix the issue. Thanks.

Same problem with similar system setup except this problem does not occur on all installations. However, there are no themes nor plugins on the system that does not work that are not on the functional systems – on the contrary, the functional systems have additional plugins.
