Your theme has to support and use cropped images in the first place.

Developer may use cropped image sizes like this:

if ( has_post_thumbnail() ) {
     the_post_thumbnail( 'your-custom-size' );
}

Also, is there no visual indication/preview that the photo was cropped? Where do i see it?

As stated in the description of the plugin, it provides functionality to adjust the cropped-images that wordpress automatically generates (as there is no other way to do this).

If you want to generally crop the image you may use the wordpress internal image tools or crop the image before upload.

Have a look in the wordpress documentation about how to add custom cropped image sizes.
