• Well, I did search the forum for this problem, but since I upgraded to 1.5.1.1 I haven’t been able to create new static pages. Theys how up in the “manage pages” area, but when I try to view them, they don’t actually exist. I get the “Page Not Found” thing.

Is this an .htaccess thing? I’m thinking it is if only because I don’t see any htaccess files on my server despite setting my FTP client to display hidden/invisible files.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

  • I have done – several times but it still won’t let me view Pages.

Just out of curiosity, why are Pages linked to permalinks?

It’s not that Pages are “linked” in a special way to permalinks. Simply, when you use (nice) permalinks it affects the whole content of your blog: posts and Pages alike.

As for the initial issue I am afraid I’m runing out of ideas ??
But as with so many other “problems” posted around here, if a feature works for thousands or tens of thousands users, and doesn’t work for a few, I always tend to think it has something to do with some special server settings, user setting, mistakes…
(The other day part of my permalinks didn’t want to work, so I was resetting my settings, uploaded a new .htaccess file at least ten times etc. – just to figure out there was a category related activated plugin which I tested earlier and forgot to deactivate.)

    I’ve done it!!!!!

Somewhere along the line I think I missed the point of what to do so forgive me for getting myself so confused!

Anyway, here’s an idiots guide for those of you having problems with .htaccess

    – Create your Page
    – Before you view it, go to the options > permalinks page and copy and paste the NEW code for your .htaccess page (which was generated when you created the page)
    – Upload your new .htaccess file to your server
    – Go back to the Pages section and click view – voila!

My problem was that whenever it didn’t work, I promptly deleted the Page in case it screwed everything up – so updating the htaccess made no difference because there was no Page in the database!!

Moshu, thanks for your patience – I got there in the end!

Now, if I can just figure out how to delete the option to paste comments on Pages…

Wow! I’m glad it worked out ??

Now, if I can just figure out how to delete the option to paste comments on Pages…
I’m not sure I understand this request. You want a “comment-free” Page or…?
Do you have a page.php template in your theme?

Oops, not “paste comments” – <b>post</b> comments!

If your theme has a page.php – open it and check for anything that calls for the comments template and/or displays the Leave a comments and such.
If you don’t have a page.php template it means WP is using your index.php to display the Pages. Save your index.php as page.php and edit out/delete the comment things ??

    All done – thanks moshu!

    Thanks for the email, Jo!

Alas, the solution you’ve presented is not much of a solution, in my opinion. To half to essentially reload the htaccess file every time you create a page seems like a lot of extra work in the long run. The real solution is in finding out why WP won’t write to that htaccess file.

I do appreciate everyone’s efforts, though! I’ll keep on it when I have some time and if I ever do get it working I’ll post back here.

Well, I checked with my host and they are saying all of my htaccess files are definitely writeable by any script that may want to write to them. So, something’s got to be up on the WP side of things. This was kind of obvious since everything worked fine under 1.5–it’s 1.5.1.1 that is doing something differently. I guess we just need to wait until the next major change in WP and upgrade yet again unless someone can help us suss this out.

Geez, it’s heart breaking to read this thread. I’m experiencing the same problem of .htaccess not being writable (despite permissions), but with a minor variation: when I change the permalink structure, WordPress fails to write .htaccess silently. That is, it doesn’t even tell me that it couldn’t write to .htaccess. I check the contents and date stamp of .htaccess via FTP and I discover that no changes were made.

I noticed the problem first when I tried creating a new page about a week ago. I don’t know when I last (successfully) created a new page, but I upgraded to WordPress 1.5.1.3 on 5 July 2005, and the latest timestamp of my .htaccess was 17 July 2005. So sometime between 17 July and now, my WordPress’s ability to write to .htaccess broke. My permissions on .htaccess are (and always have been) 666.

I thought that maybe I need to upgrade to 1.5.2, but this thread seems to indicate that I should try downgrading to 1.5! I inquired with my hosting company (monsterhosting.ca) to see if they had changed anything on the server, but they denied making any changes.

It’s frustrating because it used to work, but now it doesn’t. I’m stumped. And editing .htaccess by hand is not a great solution.

Same problem here. And I don’t even see the content of the code that should be copied in the htaccess file : I saw it before changing the permissions to the file, but after, there is no choice… no code… no window to wrtite any code
