• Hi all

First, let me start by asking you not to judge me for my utter lack of WP skills and/or understanding. Please reply to my comment as if I was the most unintelligent person you’ve ever met, with absolutely NO (ZERO!!) understanding of hmtl. codes and all that jazz…

Yes I know, I should probably not be updating our company website. But we are a small company, and believe it or not – I am the most “qualified” for the job.

All I wanted to do was write 3 pages and include them in a sidebar on our website. I googled extensively, I watched youtube videos, etc etc.
I downloaded the “simple page sidebars” and followed this Youtube How-To religiously:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpJh6dyhKFg

But somehow it ended up at the bottom of my page, and grayed out the bottom screen. I immediately deleted it (or so I thought), even deactivated the stupid plugin – BUT IT’S STILL THERE!!! And I can’t figure out how to get rid of it ?? I’ve googled so much, and read a gazillion WP forums. But there’s so much technical verbiage that I can’t follow. I have no idea what to do, and I would prefer for my boss not to kill me when she notices how ugly our website got all of a sudden.

Also – I didn’t even publish the pages I wrote because I wanted to run the information by her first, but somehow they are all easily available to the public thanks to that &#”/&%@%”!# sidebar!

Please help me smart people of WordPress – you’re my only hope

  • Would help if you could share the site and maybe the active plugins and theme.

OMG…. IT’S GONE! I have no clue what happened, but it disappeared over night. Maybe it just needed some time to catch up with my changes… O.o

But I still need a sidebar in there!

I want in on this page of our website https://www.momspartner.com/internasjonal-momsrefusjon/ (Norwegian company, Norwegian language. Just to clarify)

Does anyone know how I can do that without it jumping to the bottom of the page and graying out the entire area?

The active theme is : Swell
and the active plugins are: ThemeTrust Shortcodes, WordPress Importer, Insert Headers and Footers, Google Analytics by Yoast,
    Contact Form 7

I see the theme already has a sidebar, so go to /wp-admin/widgets.php and add a widget to the Blog Sidebar, either a text sidebar and create the links manually like <a href="page_url">page title</a> or you can create a custom menu at /wp-admin/nav-menus.php and add the custom menu widget and select the menu you just created.

To display the sidebar on a single page you can use JP Widget Visibility, this will add a button to your widgets “visibility” that will allow you to choose where and to whom you want to show the widget.

When I added the sidebar previously I created a custom menu like the video instructed me, but it didn’t end up on the side. Should I not use the Simple Page Sidebar plugin, but download that Visibility widget instead?
I’m not 100% I understand what you’re saying (I’m sorry… I wasn’t lying when I told you how ridiculously little I know about this stuff). Would you be able to dumb it down for me to the point where you’d try to explain this to a 12 year old? Like step by step. Or maybe there is some kind of youtube video that you recommend for walking me through it?

Again, sorry for my juvenile questions :/

Holy crap, did you just make that?? I feel like I’m in the virtual presence of a genius!
Thank you, I’ll try it right now and see if it works! ??

PS: There wasn’t supposed to be any sound on that video, right?

    No, no sound.

I’m not getting the visibility option. I did download that link you provided. Is there something else I need to do to activate that widget somehow?

Did you install and activate the JP Widget Visibility plugin?

Also, the header is grayed out too, it doesn’t have the same background image as all the other pages do. And the sidebar that pops up on the bottom doesn’t pop opp on the main Momsrefusjon page (https://www.momspartner.com/internasjonal-momsrefusjon/) , only the new pages I’ve created. But you can’t access those unless there’s a sidebar option on the Momsrefusjon page… Ugh, so frustrating.

I don’t understand why it doesn’t go on the side like it’s supposed to, why it ends up on the bottom in a huge grayed out area. I followed your video step by step, just like the other video I watched, but it won’t budge.

Does that happen only when you add a widget?

Did you made any changes to the theme files?

Also do you have the free or premium theme?

    Thread Starter wp_noob_needs_help

    (@wp_noob_needs_help)

I’ve only added the widget you sent as well as the Simple Page Sidebar and tried creating the sidebar. I haven’t tried anything else.

I didn’t make any changes to the theme files (at least not to my knowledge. I would have to go in to the actual theme to do that, right?)

I don’t know if we have a free or premium one – how do I find that out?

Seems like i got the wrong theme you have https://themetrust.com/demos/swell/ while i was talking about https://organicthemes.com/theme/swell-theme/, they have a similar look.

From what i see that theme doesn’t have a sidebar widget area.
A widget area is an area/zone in your site that can display your widgets and you might only have one at the bottom.

More widget areas can be added but you have to edit your theme files.

    (@wp_noob_needs_help)

Oh man… that sounds much too complicated for me, I’ll probably end up ruining something on the site. In that case I should probably talk to my boss about hiring some people to fix it.
    Thanks anyway for your help.

How do I delete the sidebar now so that it is removed form the pages?
