so, i have tried the wp tutorial, followed instructions online from other people, basically saying the exact same thing as wp and even watched a few videos on how to do it. i tried to move my wp files into a different folder and use that directory, still didn’t work. i don’t know what i’m doing wrong considering i have followed the instructions exactly on every single one of these posts on how to do it and my website still has the /wp on the end of it. i tried doing it on filezilla and cpanel to see if it made a difference but neither one fixed it. oh, my site is girlspeaksgeek.com i even made sure it wasn’t just my pc by using my phone and my husband’s phone to look at the site, but it doesn’t make a difference. please help, thank you.

Is this the guide you followed?

    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Moving_WordPress#Moving_Directories_On_Your_Existing_Server

Do you definitely remember doing steps 3 through 6 and step 8?

Yes it is. And I also Google it and followed the instructions from other people and it all says pretty much the same thing. I change my site url in the settings, and then it says site can’t be found, like it should, I copy the folders so I can change the directory in the php, copy back into the public_html and then when I go to see if it worked it still has the /wp on the url…except for when I moved the wp files into a different folder, when I did that I couldn’t get back to my wp-admin page, but I fixed that by moving everything back. But I make sure I save the changes in the settings for the url and the permalinks too. I don’t get what I’m doing wrong.

Move the files to where you want them to be, but just time check the database to make sure that the settings URLs are correct there: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Changing_The_Site_URL#Changing_the_URL_directly_in_the_database

If they are, and you’re still having trouble, please let us know the URL of the site with the problem.

ok, so i changed both and it didn’t work, after i changed it i couldn’t log onto my wp-admin page, i got a 404 error and the site wasn’t visible either. so, to be clear, i change the site url and home url right? and my site is https://www.girlspeaksgeek.com but when you type it in it will take you to https://www.girlspeaksgeek.com/wp

ok, i tried it again and all it did was take me to the url with /wp at the end of it again and give me the 404 error for my wp-admin page. this is really starting to be frustrating lol i’ve been trying to get this to work for the last 3 days with no luck

If it’s automatically going there, it sounds like you may have setup a redirect elsewhere.

Check the .htaccess file at the domain level, as well as your hosting provider and domain registrar’s control panel.

Also, if there is an index.html or home.html file at the domain level, delete it.

this is the only thing in my htaccess file in my public_html:RedirectMatch ^/$ /wp/ is this what you’re talking about? i don’t understand what you mean by domain level…sorry, i am totally new to all of this.

ok, so i found out where the redirect option is in cpanel, but for some reason, i don’t have it or i’m not seeing it at least.

    (@girlspeaksgeek)

ok, so i found the redirects, there’s only one so, for domain: ALL, directory: / redirect url: /wp/ type: permanent is this what i need to change or turn off? because when i tried, i got this error message:Could not open htaccess file /home/****/public_html/.htaccess
the stars are my cpanel name…

    (@girlspeaksgeek)

    also, i don’t see a home.html or index.html anywhere

It looks like you installed your WP in the subdirectory /WP. In your cpanel, you might be able to CLONE the site up one level.

    Thread Starter girlspeaksgeek

    (@girlspeaksgeek)

i tried moving all of the files to a new folder before, but it didn’t work, but if cloning is different than i will try it. and i didn’t know that my wp should’ve been in it’s own directory until after i had already installed it…i did a 1 click install through my host. this is a learning process i guess lol

by clone do you mean copy? and you mean from my public_html to my home right?

Contact your host for assistance if you need help with cloning.
