I have the AAM plugin installed with the Plus Package extension. I’m trying to restrict access to certain PDF documents that have been uploaded to the Media Library.

I can find the document and manage its access to restrict ‘Read’ access, but it doesn’t seem to have any effect. The document is still accessible to users who are not logged in.

Does this plugin actually work for media files?

  • Hi bunmun,

Media is a tricky part of WordPress CMS. For last couple years guys from core team keep refactoring the way it works and we believe that it is still can be improved a lot.

Media is not a normal post or page. That is why the Read option technically does not apply to it because you are dealing with a physical file.

There is no an easy way to protect the file because you would have to protect it from the direct access and this come with a challenge. We might create an extension that will work with media files in the near future but this is still under the question.

    Appreciate your interest in AAM.

    Thanks, Vasyl.

My team has tried the User Access Manager plugin and it seems to do the job of securing physical file access. It looks like an htaccess file gets created in the uploads folder on the server.

Is this something that can be built into the Advanced Access Manager?

    Hi bunmun,

Yes, it will be build in. We just have to allocated couple days to do this task. Most likely this will added to AAM as an extension in the near future.

Thank you for your interest in AAM.

    Vasyltech,

Has this been addressed? I’m trying to restrict access to uploaded video files, so that only users who are of a particular role can view the videos. Looks like currently I cannot restrict access to a media file or category of media files. Thoughts?

    Shannan.

    Hi bunmun and Shannan –

Did you ever get a resolution on this? I am dealing with the same issue and not hearing back from Vasyltech…

The method they describe here “breaks” all uploaded images throughout the website:
