Can’t Save to single.php

I am trying to make my sidebar show on individual articles. Your support forums have been helpful in getting the code and telling me where to put it, but when I try to save the singl.php file all the edits vanish. I have similar problems with the other .php files too. I’m new to this so I’m wondering if I am missing a step. thanks
