Can’t see Post Excerpt

I have gone into settings and selected “Display Post Excerpts”. I have added an excerpt in my post by selecting “screen options” and checking “excerpts” then adding the excerpt text to the resulting content area. But I don’t see my excerpt, just a dash below the post title. Am I missing something obvious or am I misunderstanding how to add the excerpt?

I am using the Gallery Pro theme. It does not come with the slider by default, I added it myself and had to modify the widget area in front-page.php to get the slider to appear correctly.
